Biden to start considering running mates, consulted Obama

(Reuters) - Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden said on Sunday he needed to start vetting possible running mates "in a matter of weeks" and that he discussed the pick with former President Barack Obama.

Biden's vice presidential options will include at least six or seven women who will be subjected to background checks to ensure there will not "be any snafu," he told donors at a fundraising event held by telephone.

"I have to start that vetting process relatively soon, meaning in a matter of weeks," he said. "I think there will be a group that is in excess of six or seven people who I'll look at."

Biden said at a Democratic debate last week that he would pick a woman for the job, a qualification he reiterated on Sunday.

Biden also emphasized that the woman would have to agree with his fundamental view on policies, including healthcare, education and the need for expansive U.S. influence in the world. He said he shared that kind of common ground with Obama - whom he served as vice president - although they sometimes differed on tactics.

Above all, the person would need to be qualified to serve as president immediately.

"I've actually talked to Barack about this - the most important thing is that it has to be someone who, the day after they're picked, is prepared to be president of the United States of America if something happened," said Biden, 77.

Biden holds a strong lead over Senator Bernie Sanders, his lone remaining rival for the party's nomination to face Republican President Donald Trump in November's election.

Sidelined from campaigning in public because of the coronavirus crisis that has put nearly one in three Americans under orders to stay at home, Biden said he would start broadcasting on Monday morning from his home in Delaware. Those briefings will give Biden a way to offer an alternative to the daily news conferences on the coronavirus held by Trump, whose disaster response Biden has criticized.

Biden has already promised to not use who is the best person for the job as his criteria, so who cares?

All I want to know, is the lady renowned for her tongue lesions, coughing fits and callous behavior towards Libyan ambassadors on this list?? The problem with Biden is he will be reliant completely on his VP. I just don't believe Biden is compos mentis.

Another point is does anybody believe we will be having an election in November at all? Given the rate the virus is growing we can't make plans for tomorrow or next week never mind in 6 months time. Seeing as Trump is just knocking this one out of the park in terms of being an incredible war time leader I think we should leave him in place until normalcy returns.

Haha, cases doubling every three days in the US. You are at 32,000 cases this morning, you’ll be passing China’s total by the end of the week.

Is this what you call ‘knocking it out of the park’?

Nobody hates Trump more than I do, and I have had many heated debates with his supporters, but to call them desperate? I don't think you have a firm grasp on the situation.

She and Mrs Obama are probably the only choices that can get people to a rally. I don't recall any previous rallies reaching into 4 digit attendance!

It's obviously going to be Michelle - that's why he needed to talk to her husband first.

I'm guessing out of Bernie, Joe and Trump, 2 of the 3 will contract the virus. I expect at least one or two of these frontrunners to drop out.

I think it will be Hillary.  The Clintons will use this senile old man to get back in the White House.

That's the good news. I hope he chooses well, but I'm not sure he'll be there at all in November. Or Trump either, for that matter.

Emperor Rosko said on his radio show that it will be Amy. The Emperor has spoken.

There is a 3 1/2 year age difference between Trump and Biden.

Oh, so you do not believe that  women are capable of the job?

Women have been blocked from the position over the years because of prejudice. It is good that Biden recognizes that 50%+ of the population is entitled to parity. There will probably be a lot more  women around after the Covid 19  catastrophe runs amuck in the USA.

President Obama has always maintained open communication with Mr. Biden.

So has President Bush.

In the interest of allowing a free selection, Mr. Obama has been neutral, and rightly so.

Never before. Biden is the 1st. He is the only candidate ever to have excluded a running mate solely because of sex. Biden is only considering a female VP, all males are excluded regardless of how suitable or qualified they are for the position. Identity politics and PC at its very very worst.

In the United States, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination based on race, SEX, color, national origin or religion.

whoops!!

Obama still hasn't endorsed Biden. That speaks volumes.

I don't think that's true. I think there probably have been many presidential candidates that excluded a potential running mate solely because they were a woman.

Why should he want to endorse anyone? Not a smart move politically.
