im beginning to see a pattern, i get constant demands that i need to update this OS and that app,

they come as sure as the next doomsday prediction every week,

and always with the net result that my current hardware simply isnt enough,

the updates presage the requirement for me to go and buy a new computer/telephone

to keep up with the endless spam of updates.

my verdict is: this is just a sales plot to force me to fork up the dough for new hardware

You are so right!  Figured that out a few years back...updates are for generating sales as much as fixing software...

If it ain't  broken...it does not require new software most of the time...

You are so wrong!

You are getting regular (and free!) updates to your software because vendor is keeping track of things for you and applying security updates. I'd be worried if i had a bit of software installed and did not get regular updates! That would be a sign of an unmaintained bit of code that is vulnerable to attack.

I find it very hard to draw any link between "updates" and your ""current hardware" requirements unless you are operating a 10 year old flip-phone or something equally antique.

In the Windows world ... roughly every 5 or 6 years a 'step' change in the functionality offered by a new version requires a small hardware upgrade ... so when Win10 was introduced, an older device with 2mb RAM would not hack it any more and 4mb became the norm. Intermediary software updates coming out of Microsoft roughly monthly never require hardware changes.

Do you drive the same car as you did 5 years ago? Maybe not. But even if you do, would a current model car be safer/more efficient/faster? Probably yes. Do you sign up for free servicing/maintainance if it's offered? Probably.

Rather than start a vague ranty thread* maybe OP would be better advised to direct some energy into learning more about his/her device - for example researching ad-blockers, cleaning app like CCleaner, remove unwanted apps, eliminate apps which overlap in functionality etc etc. All this is easy to do and free.

* OP has posted no useful information to allow anyone to help him/her. My guess? the thread will run to 5 pages anyway ...

on good ole win xp that never auto updated, i never had one single lag of

one single milli second, otoh on win 10, even with a machine twice

as much hardware, it always lag, always, and its getting worse by the update

i wish i could flip off permanently.

on the phone side it aint any better, with the latest whatsapp update

i had to uninstall apps to make room for the latest drivel

for the whatsapp to work at all, and the phone still freezes like the computer

due to a severe lack of ram, even with a bunch of apps uninstalled,

and im off to buy another phone with 6 times more ram

to keep the phone responsive enough to be of any use at all,

hopefully next phone will last me 2 years until the updates kills it off

by ways of saturated memory
