Hi all, with all this hot weather around at the moment, I was thinking of buying one of these fans that spray a fine mist of water to keep cool, saw some in Bangkok a while ago.

Anybody have one? any good? how much? where to buy?

Regards Mark.

Really, some people are just toooo paranoid. Relax!!!

Paranoid !! few years ago at last 32 died in Holland of veterans disease after walking true an water fountain which was contaminated with the veterans bacteria.

Copy from Dutch Newspaper

Netherlands, 1999

In March 1999, an outbreak in the Netherlands occurred during a flower exhibition in Bovenkarspel. 200 people became ill and at least 32 people died. There is a possibility that more people died from it, but these people were buried before the Legionella infection was recognized. The source of the bacteria were probably water sprinklers ( fountain ) the exhibition area.

So please don’t say that it is paranoid, I walk always around those water fans and don’t use there terrace better careful then dead.

And as you may also know, most of the problems with what you describe comes from water that has been sitting or is recycled over and over again. Not the case with these misting fans.

Seems to have gone off subject, can anybody respond to my original questions???

I remember seeing some large fan-misters at Robinsons on Rachada last year during the hot season.

I was shocked by the price tag of 32,000 baht as I recall.

Maybe they were the very large ones intended for use in restaurants??

Home Pro forces customers to go through them to enter there stores so assume they sell them. As a glasses wearer do not have a great fondness for them and with the humidity normally at about 80% do not appreciate the increase for a moment of cooler air.

Seems a bit expensive, but as you say, maybe for large restaurants.

I'am sure there must be some smaller types around, just don't know yet.

It's another version of a mold making machine. Usually not an issue... there's mold everywhere... but when you purposefully produce it and spray it around and breath it in...

Not sure what application you are thinking of, but an alternative is to rig up a mister on your own. I have seen this on patios, etc. You could do that for a few hundred baht. Go to a Homepro store or similar and look for the Rainbird lawn sprinkling equipment. They have a variety of different nozzles from very fine mist on up. They also sell a black vinyl tubing that you can plug the nozzles in. You just stab the tubing with an icepick or similar and then plug in the nozzle. You could run the tubing to a tap or connection, intall it against a wall or eave, and voila you have a fine mist falling around. You could add your own fan if you want, but it might not be necessary. I remember seeing a system like that set up outside a shop in Sedona. The entire set-up would cost you peanuts.

I wouldn't worry about Legionnaires disease unless you happen to be a legionnaire... :o

I just don't think these systems work well in the Thai climate. It is too humid here most of the time and when it is not too humid you really don't need the sprayer because it is not so hot. In a dry place like Sedona, Arizona, they work great.

In the desert southwest in the USA, some people have their houses cooled with evaporative coolers instead of refridgeration. It is cheaper than refridgeration, and works great but only when there is low humidity.

You are 100% right. The high humidity here pretty much negates the evaporative effect necessary to make them work well. BTW, in AZ and elsewhere they are often referred to as swamp coolers. Best way to cool an outdoor area here is to plant trees and groundcover instead of cement and tar.

I've also heard of water misters that leave no water residue at all (should prevent mold on furniture etc...). Has anyone tried one of those auramist misting fans?
