Thailand to announce nationwide curfew starting Friday

BREAKING.jpg

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand is to announce a nationwide curfew between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. starting Friday to try to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, the government said in a statement on Thursday.

The curfew will have some exceptions, including for the transport of medical supplies, movement of people into quarantine, patients and travel of medical personnel, according to the statement shown to reporters.

"The prime minister will make the announcement this evening on national television around 6 p.m.," deputy spokeswoman deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek told Reuters when reached by telephone.

No doubt they can then show that it was the halting of the “dirty foreigners” solved the problem.
I look forward to that  graph soon.

Yes, saw this on the Thai TV news, then came here to see if anything was mentioned.

Seems reasonably sensible, not sure how they're going to police it, especially in outlying areas.

I guess this is the 'last chance' to prevent a massive spread, if it fails then it's going to play out over many months as it spreads through the population who go out and mingle with others.

100+ new every day, not so few, better safe than underestimate repeating mistakes of others.

Perhaps they just want to keep it that way.

If you've got something empirical that justifies your cynicism about the number of cases, let's hear it.  If you haven't. what was your point?

This curfew will just squeeze the life out of the people even more. The country is gonna be in a dreadful state when this thing is declared over and borders open, etc again.

If the economy doesn't collapse completely i'll be amazed

The 7-11 in my village is disgusting, a hilltribe girl sat on the pavement selling that plastic rubbish u hang off ur car mirror, bags and bags of rubbish piled up, filthy looking diseased dogs slumped everywhere and Q's for the ATM's.

.......and this means they can only sit there til 10pm. Gotcha.

So u don't watch the footy from UK, u know, when it's on.

I go to bed abnormally early so I can wake up at 2 - 3 AM to watch it, back in bed by 5 for another couple of hours.

I'm a Cardiff fan, so most times I am back in bed early.

Me too!

I'm an afternoon drinker ...... no hangover next day.

Time for cocktails!

A move in the right direction, I'd venture. Perhaps even longer hours i.e. curfew from dusk to dawn, instead of 'just' 2200 - 1600 hrs? And restricted movement during the day - this may make it more effective.

The government should also consider rolling out an education campaign - showing how the virus is spread etc. Long story short, the need for social distancing. Otherwise, people might be off the streets but huddled in groups at home drinking, eating and partying - which will be contrary to what social distancing - and the curfew - are trying to achieve.

And as usual, this being Thailand (and this is not Thai-bashing), the challenge is also enforcement and policing the curfew. Good luck and I honestly hope it works, for the sake of everyone.

As a side thought, maybe it's also to provide security during the night ... many ppl are going to run out of money soon.

No idea, they don't mention it ... but I can imagine it.

Won't make much difference to road deaths.

Shows is the key word. As opposed to ACTUAL.

Also if it was actually true that the actual cases here are still low (sadly I don't see how anyone with basic common sense could believe that) severe measures at an "early stage" would be even better news! The more severe the measures, as EARLY as possible give the best odds of avoiding even the beginning of exponential infection rates. But I think exponential infection had already begun here.

In reality the UK have gone further because the measures bought in are actually being enforced.
It’s 10pm til 4am. How is that stopping people going to work?

It's not supposed to stop people going to work.
