I have the dubious privilege of surviving the Tsunami on Koh Phi-Phi.

It is interesting to compare the performance of officialdom in the two emergencies. In the Tsunami, temporary passports were dished out at the drop of a hat, evacuation flights provided, bureaucratic immigration requirements suspended or ignored, and everyone, everywhere, was helpful and concerned - even in Bangkok, miles from any danger or damage. The Thai military, police, and provincial authorities, and even the telephone companies, did everything possible, and more, to aid those affected.

Covid is the opposite. Inept, bungling, wrong-headed bureaucracy, indecisive management, and rampant xenophobia, tempered with greed and ignorance.

Come on Thailand: you can do better.

Come on, Embassadors, Consuls: so can you.

You are comparing apples and pineapples and you should know it.

The Tsunami was obviously very bad. But it happend on one day and from then on people were trying to makes the situation as good as possible.

And it was in relative few places. At least 99% of the population was not in danger.

IMHO the Thai government is far away from perfect. But which government is perfect at this time? It seems in Thailand the situation is a lot better than in many other countries. Lets take it easy with the blame game. Who of us would have made so many better decisions at the right time? ...
