TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will declare a state of emergency over the coronavirus as early as Tuesday, the Yomiuri newspaper reported, as the number of infections topped 1,000 in the capital, Tokyo.

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates will reinforce its stockpile of strategic goods and waive residency visa fines for the rest of the year in response to the coronavirus outbreak, its vice president said on Sunday.

Homeless being urged to move to govt lodging amid Covid-19 fears

Social Development and Human Security Minister Juti Krairiksh visited Lumpini Park and Hua Lamphong train station in Bangkok on Sunday (April 5), urging homeless people residing there to move to temporary lodging provided by the ministry to reduce the risk of contracting Covid-19 and comply with the government’s curfew.

Bt5,000 cash handouts to commence on Wednesday

More than 260,000 out of 24.2 million registrants for the government’s Bt5,000 cash handout campaign have cancelled their applications, while the first batch of people will receive the money starting this Wednesday (April 8), the Finance Ministry said.

PHUKET: Karon and Rawai have been “shut down” by order of the Phuket Governor, with all non-essential vehicles being banned entry or exit from the main tourist and expat residential areas in the south of the island.

Rawai checkpoint nabs curfew breakers, meth pills

PHUKET: Officers stationed at a checkpoint in Rawai have reported arresting nine people last night for breaking the nationwide curfew from 10pm to 4am. One of the persons arrested was found carrying ya bah (methamphetamine) pills.

Private hospitals instructed not to charge medical fees for Covid-19

The Public Health Ministry has prohibited private hospitals from charging Covid-19 patients medical fees, with the Department of Health Service Support already informing hospitals and medical centres nationwide, department director-general Tares Krassanairawiwong said.

KANCHANABURI, Thailand (Reuters) - The mahouts at an elephant sanctuary in western Thailand have resorted to swimming in a nearby lake to gather weeds for fodder, as a nationwide lockdown has left them without tourist dollars needed to pay for the fruit their animals like.
