We live just outside a little country town in N/E Oz and she finally got her letter from some Minister the other day saying she's been accepted to be an Oz citizen, after passing all the hoops. Yes it is not cheap, but my wife says it xxits all over LOS and she's 100% right. No racism here - she's just a local, - dozens of Asians in this valley. Her best friend is a spunky 42 y.o. Thai who after 3 kids still looks fantastic. Add to that our air is the best I have ever breathed, which after getting laryngeal cancer from 13 years of the filthy muck I was forced to inhale in C Mai, is a blessing. Went into town today to buy beer and other stuff. No sweat. No one within 100klms has any knowledge of anyone who has caught C-19. Biggest bitch is that I own racehorses that are trained in QLD and race there, but I can't cross the blxxdy border at the moment 'cos of C-19. My wife says her English is krap, (can't use a 'c' or I'll get moderated) but everyone here says its' great, so she agrees with a few of the op's about local English ! Wife, daughter and I have zilch intention of ever returning to LOS - too set up here now and anyway, better places to visit in SE Asia when the virus is gone. As for the cops ? My 98 y.o. dad was a cop after WW11 - as he says, if you don't break the law, you will never see them. I know the local Sgt - my missus says she loves it that they have street patrols. Zero crime area. Plenty of weed around and cheap too for those who indulge (I don't). As for black street gangs, yeh I've heard they have them in Melbourne, but none here in the bush. Too boring for them and anyway, the local indigenous coloured folk dominate this valley - we don't need to import any ! Stay safe boys and girls (especially boys) ! I like to visit thailand but dont want to live there. I returned to oz 5 years ago for 2 weeks holiday. Never again. Way too expensive, police/nanny state. If I had to leave asia for down under would probably rather nz. only reason i will/may return to oz is to attend funerals of family, if i have to. I have walked the streets of Lakemba many times, especially down Haldon Street, which is the main drag, and no issues, but then again, I look like a w.o.g. so I suppose for a fair skinned Ozzie, you would stand out like dogs balls and feel out of place. I am only two minutes walk away from a World Class beach, health care is free and with the AUD to Baht being in the toilet, it is not much more expensive to live in Australia IF you own your own house or condo outright like we do. I don't go out and eat pub meals or go to restaurants. Even here in Thailand, most of it is home cooking. I am married, don't need a bar or girl. I don't drink. I miss clean air and the beach a great deal. Chiang Mai has not got clean air and it is a long way to the beach. My wife after getting PR in Australia can become a Resident easy. Sure I may pay twice the amount for a coffee but you won't get the beach-side view I have got. If you drink, well, it's not cheap but then you have decent wines. The beef is real beef and even the taste of milk is different. I would kill for some Lamb now. Thailand has treated me good; great wife and great family but nothing in the back of my mind beats the beach, free health care and clean air. I will remain in Thailand most likely for another 10 years but when my health insurance here gets too out of reach even for me, going home may well be the answer. For many here, lack of funds in Australia and being on most likely a old age pension, living in Australia is not that easy, so most of SEA beckons. I know many Australian guys here that have nothing in Australia and no way back. With losing a massive amount in currency value, many of these people would barely make 34,000 a month now and would have had to tighten the belt a lot. On the gold coast due to a perfect climate means using AC 3 WEEK'S of the year .Never seen 300 bucks. Great transport system with subsidised fares so no car . would need to go share accommodation though with a 30 % rent assistance . wine is silly cheap and not illegal to home brew beer like here. Its very doable Forgot to mention deli food and cheeses! It's free if you are happy to be put on a waiting list for non-emergency treatment and take whatever doctor is available, and dental treatment costs are prohibitive.
