Popular Post connda
The New Normal will end up looking like the Soviet Union and East Germany pre-1990. The fearful will embrace the change; all other will be repressed and marginalized. The majority will manufacture a dystopia of their own design. Orwell will roll in his grave.

To them a couple of million deaths would be unimportant so long as the money keeps rolling in. If a scientific suggestion looks like spoiling the profit line, it gets discredited first by laughably unscientific news sources and then, when it becomes inevitable, the politicians claim they were about to do it and it is all their own idea. Then proceed to blame anyone who reveals the actual truth. "To them a couple of million deaths would be unimportant so long as the money keeps rolling in." Are you saying there is no need for a "new normal"? We just proceed as usual? Growing up in 70's and 80's Finland, which while it wasn't a commie state, was still kowtowing to USSR because of the defeat in WW2, and remembering that, the scenario you describe is very, very unappealing. One of the best days of my life was when we got the news russkies had fallen. There was a heavy recession, but then my generation rolled their sleeves up and things like Nokia came to life. Glorious times. Now it's just downhill everywhere. 3
Bohemianfish
I hope things open up for the sake of the people and travel to Thailand is allowed without too much trouble. Our annual trip to see family/in-laws and friends was canceled for this month, obviously. Ready to move there as well, at least part-time.

Dogmatix
When will they let back the 4 million Burmese, Cambodians and Laotians plus some illegal Vietnamese and Filipinos to do the jobs that Thais refuse to do. That could be necessary for many constructions sites, farms and other businesses to re-open.
Dogmatix
2. Health systems are able to "detect, test, isolate and treat every case and trace every contact". This will never happen in Thailand. 4 Schools, workplaces and other essential places have established preventive measures. Immigration's shining example can be taken as a model for how this will be done. 5 The risk of importing new cases "can be managed". Soon at least 2m foreign workers will need to be brought back to do the jobs Thais refuse to do. Absolutely no problem. 6 Communities are fully educated, engaged and empowered to live under a new normal. Not a chance.

berrec
Any government that wants to start lifting restrictions, must first meet six conditions, according to WHO: WHO; I thought the rock band WHO had more credibility then the current World Health Organization! You can see the WHO wish list is exactly what it is; a bunch of overpaid fat cat bureaucrats writing a Christmas wish list that is totally impractical to implement and sustain in a modern society. WHO?
