My partner says that there is still a stigma attached to Thai women who either marry or live with falangs, the general concensus is that they are all prostitutes, unless they come from a hi so family of course.

Nonsense. It is how the girl looks and acts that will distinguish how people look at her. Very easy to tell.

The general consensus is 'don't generalise'.

(Using a "generalization" to warn against "generalizing")

I've had to tell a few people over the years to remember that not all Thai women are "for sale" as many of them were under the "colonial master" idea that all Thai women would drop to their knees immediately to please the "white man".
Racist and arrogant and obviously wrong (on many levels).

There are more than a few people on this forum who have similar attitudes (that they are some kind of colonial masters and that everyone else is of a lesser race who should bow down to them and grovel for few baht those masters may toss their way).
You see it in their posts, especially when it comes to dealing with the locals.

There have been stories in the past about people (foreigners) making "untoward" comments towards ordinary women working in department stores or other "non-bar" places. Some stories about guys going to jail for grabbing some women's breasts or butt because she was selling (hats/purses/shoes/whatever) on Walking Street so the guy decided that must mean she was "available".

Far too many people just assume that because they are a "mighty foreigner" and have 100 baht in their pocket, that must mean all women crave them. Sadly, I have no doubt that many of them actually, truly think like that.

But attitudes and social "norms" change over time as newer generations try to throw off the "shackles" of the older generations. 20 years from now the video in question might seem outright bland and not worthy of mention by the people running that country then.

But there will still be bitter old foreigners griping about everything from the weather to the lack of valet parking for their "walkers" next to their favourite bar stool.

Have you seen her video? It was not porn by any stretch of the imagination. You could say the orgasm scene from "When Harry met Sally" was porn then.

noun
noun: pornography
  1. printed or visual material containing the explicit description or display of sexual organs or activity, intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional

Perhaps if the guy filming had used his mother or granny? It was intended to be soft porn. I certainly wasn't something you would let your kids watch unless It was in a family destination like Pattaya.

What's a "pretty"?

In Thailand a "pretty" is a girl, usually fairly good looking, that is hired for her looks to appear at various events.

Car shows, music events and so on. They will often dress "sexy" and usually look good no matter what they are wearing. Apparently there are different levels of "participation" they may engage in.
For example, at a car show, the organizers may hire some "pretties" to wear race driver type costumes and pose for photos beside vehicles.
At some shows, you may see those pick-up trucks with the blaring speakers and "pretties" dancing in the back.

At some events, "pretties" may be hired to promote a product (like Chang Beer or Jack Daniels for example). They will serve drinks and smile and that's about it.

However, for "some" parties, "pretties" can be hired to dress sexy (usually not "slutty" though) and mingle with the crowd.
Some may be willing (for a price) to allow some flirting and "touching". Some (for a higher price) may be willing to engage in other activities.

It was big news not long ago when a "pretty" was found dead on a couch of a lobby. CCTV showed a guy taking her into an elevator and later he was seen carrying her out of an elevator and placing her on the couch before leaving. It is thought she was dead long before he put her on the couch.

Hmm, 11,000 baht is an unusual fee. Then I figured it out.

Must have been 10,000 baht for the video job and 1,000 baht for 'something else'.

In her case the other way round: 1,000 Baht for the video, and yes, yes...

Yeah, I was going to suggest the same thing.

"Hey baby, how much to do (this) ?"
"10,000 baht."
"How much if I want to film it too ?"
"1,000 baht extra."

Of course, had she claimed she'd done it for a mere 2,000 baht, she may have gotten away with a "wai and 500 baht fine". But as she admitted she was paid 11,000 baht, the fine might be a bit higher.

Then again, she may not want to advertise that she can be had for less. Maybe she never even got paid 11,000 but said it so that future "hires" would have to pay more !

You're so right.

One can dream on, especially because all of the half dozen of "pretties" I've come across were seriously ordinary, but this one did have a... shall we say spark, or sparkle? Take your pick

Kids would have no idea what she was doing, or pretending to do.

A girl who may have dressed slutty for bar work can suddenly be transformed into a respectable housewife when given the opportunity. I'm not talking about those who have tats all over their body.

Alternatively, in 20 years the video may be cause for a public stoning.

Many countries are becoming more repressive and/or run by religious extremists.

I would consider Thailand may fall to Islam, or some repressive Buddhist orthodoxy.

I believe they are 'Coyotes'.

"Coyotes" are (generally) go-go dancers who don't dance nude (or even partially nude). They used to be popular in Thai-style clubs.  There used to be a "high end" Coyote bar on a soi between #2 Road and Beach Road, just past Central Pattaya Road (as you are heading towards Alcazar).
One one side was the Coyote bar (forget the name now) and the other side was a Thai nightclub.

To get into the Coyote Bar you had to be dressed "decent". They wouldn't let anyone in wearing shorts, flip flops or t-shirts. Frikken expensive too but man, they had some of the hottest women in Pattaya dancing. Choreographed shows and always they always were wearing at least pasties and a g-string.
I asked what the "bar fine" was one time and was told 12,000 baht. I decided I wasn't really keen on finding out if that was true or if they were "taking the <deleted>" (a girl I knew that worked there also told me the same but I had the suspicion that the amount varied depending on if the girl wanted to go or not).

Also used to be a Coyote Bar on the soi behind the Marine Plaza hotel, right by where that little walkway connects to Walking Street (along which the Blues Factory used to be located - I wonder whatever became of "Tina"). Went there a couple times because they had an awesome DJ and I used to buy CDs from him.

The girls dancing in the back of the pick-ups probably are both. "Pretties" and "Coyotes". Or "Pretties" and "Go Go Dancers" if the price is right. I knew some go-go girls that would also work as "pretties".

In some cases, the difference between "pretty" and "coyote" and "fully naked go go dancer" is simply a matter of price !
