“Rich people will be fine”: When social distancing becomes a privilege

Over 100 countries have imposed partial or full lockdowns since the coronavirus hit the globe – an action being touted as an effective way to help contain the spread. However, the measure is not something which can be easily adhered to in developing countries where people from villages come to the city to earn their living.

 

Concerns over how the poorest people in Cambodia will survive the pandemic have risen as a plan to declare a state of emergency in the country which is being considered by Prime Minister Hun Sen and relevant officials. At present, around 4.8 million of the country’s population are reported to be living in poverty.

 

While the wealthy can buy food and stock up if a lockdown is put in place, the socio-economically disadvantaged are further marginalised as the need to fill their stomachs becomes even more evasive. Khmer Times spoke with several stallholders in the capital’s Kandal and Central markets to gain an understanding of how they are coping with the consequences of the crisis and corresponding containment measures enforced by the government.

Yes the rich have their life styles, way different than most of us. Remember how

some rich have fled Thailand, and are still freely spending some of their own

money elsewhere, instead of being in jail. Red Bull guy is one of those, I am thinking about.

The rules never apply to the rich and powerful in any country and that's just disgusting and shows what a farce this all is. Governments never apply the same rules to themselves, they except the masses to comply with.

well sure, the rich are rich. in this case they arent putting anyone at risk so I dont see the issue.
