Postpone ban on paraquat and chlorpyrifos, urges TCC

The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) has called on the Industry Ministry to postpone the ban on paraquat and chlorpyrifos from June 1 to December 31 as the June deadline "will affect plantations and livestock".

TCC chairman Kalin Sarasin said the ban lacks clear details and several entrepreneurs were unprepared to cope with the sudden change, while others still have to deal with the Covid-19 crisis.

The National Hazardous Substances Committee is scheduled to hold a meeting on April 30 to discuss the matter and if the postponement was not considered, imports would be affected by the residual substance index, which must be zero.

Also, ingredients for processed food such as soybean, wheat, coffee and cocoa will bear the brunt since these are widely used in plantations and have to meet international standards, he said.

Thailand will experience a shortage of ingredients for production and could later face a food crisis, which no one wants during this pandemic, Kalin warned.

“[Deputy Prime Minister] Somkid Jatusripitak has promised to discuss the issue with [Industry Minister] Suriya Juangroongruangkit,” he added.

Spending more time in committee meetings talking and twiddling their thumbs hasn't found us a reasonably priced less harmful alternative yet so it's only right they extend the time to December 31st...but what year?

What a joke. Plant things that are easier to grow, employ people if you dont want to farm like a real farmer or gonget a job ina factory. Im on a farm and we use NO chemicals at all. Not even fertilizer and our soil is or i should say WAS some of the worst in the country.

This is all about money and not the health of people. The need for an alternative is an excuse. The alternative should be stop farming if you cant give up the shat regardless of how many wasted generations in your families had been using the stuff....

I’ll give you a couple of guesses on who owns the chemical companies ?

Please stop poisoning us TIT

They absolutely don't care to poison the people if only they get richer

Already Banned, but this is Thailand and nothing is ever chiseled in stone unless there's some fire-power or massive amounts of money behind it.

These are nasty products and you would want to think twice about buying these. I know the farmers like them because they are effective and cheap but this is nasty stuff!!

Paraquat is mostly manufactured in China.

Next year, but the date will change to February 30th. ????

These bans should not be overturned just because USA doesn't happen to like them or the economic impact a few of their rich companies will experience.

On this matter. Trump must be resisted, SE Asia has been a dumping ground for lethal chemicals and products banned elsewhere for far too long. Overturn the bans if and only if Trump is prepared to drink a pint of each on TV, but not before.

Money where the mouth is...

If you need any illustration of USA behaviour and their level of for concern for people, look at the behaviour of American big tobacco over the past 20 years.
