I think the fastest you can get in Pattaya would be a 2048/512 package. TT&T Maxnet offers it at 5200 Baht/month +7% VAT

http://www.maxnet.co.th/product_Premier.php

You will need to have a TT&T phoneline, and to get that kind of speed you'll have to live pretty close to the telephone exchange you're connected to...

Don't get lured in the cheaper home packages, they work well for connecting to Thailand based servers, but their international speed is very heavy oversubscribed, so it can slow down to less then 10% of what you're supposed to get during peak hours...

I have the premier package and it works pretty much as advertised, with crystal clear VOIP calls. I use both Skype and Terrasip (with an IP phone).

Do i need to have telephone cable first or can i have direct ADSL?

You need to have a phoneline, but with TT&T you can subscribe to the phoneline and the ADSL in one time. Reckon on 2 weeks to get hooked up if free lines are available in your area...

How fast is normal ADSL here?
Simply depends on what package you chose. The more you pay the better/faster it will be...

Quality internet is very expensive in Thailand. Check out the prices of business packages with almost guranteed speed here:

High speed WIFI?

If you're lucky enough to be in an area where you can pick up Wifi signals, you might get lucky but don't keep your hopes up. Speed/usability will heavily depend on what the other people are doing when they are online.

Plus the added security risks, I certainly don't want to use wifi as my main connection...

Wireless mobile internet is still in it's infancy here, with GPRS/Edge being the fastest available in Pattaya, with speeds of between 60 and 150 kbps down, and 30-60kbps upload...

I got the maxnet 1096kps (sorry I am not techie but its something like that) about 4000 bhat per month.

I use an irish VOIP phone service and 90% of the time it works fine...you might get an odd day it is slower etc....

maybe I might upgrade to this 2048/512 package. TT&T Maxnet offers it at 5200 Baht/month +7% VAT

if it is much more faster. since I rely on VOIP to get calls in from europe, I cannot afford down time.

worst problem was in Jan with that earthquake...tat really messed things up!

A friend of mine has the 2048/512 kbps Maxnet premier connection.

Although I haven't used his connection a lot, every time I tested it returned well over 1500kbps on most international speedtests. And he assures me that this is the case 90% of the time.

He uses his connection to watch streaming video encoded at over 1024 kbps with very seldom a re-buffering happening. Depending on which codec used this returns pretty good quality on a regular TV screen.

Another friend I know who needs very reliable internet connections (rock solid stable VPN connection), is on the 1024/512 Biz package.

His speed is simply 900 kbps all the time. Even after the taiwan earthquake the speed stayed solid at 900 kbps, although the latency increased quite a lot due to the extensive re-routing going on, sometimes messing up the VPN... Admittedly the price at 15900 Baht/month borders on the ridiculous, but for that he gets a response team over at his office within 1 hour of calling customer support (on a dedicated number which is never occupied or leaves you listening to muzak for 20 minutes) in the 2 times he had technical problems. And they installed a pretty impressive Cisco adsl modem/router...

Gerry, upping the speed on your internet package is not going to increase reliability!

VOIP only needs a fraction of the capacity your connection offers, and on those "slow" days it probably will not be the slow speed which is messing up your connections, but packet loss/high latency and/or jitter...

Which most often is happening somewhere on the way between your location and the western world.

Ah so...its all the different servers/connection btwn Thai and Europe on the other side of the world, that I have to pass through that causes an odd bad day on the VOIP.

Up in the north, we only have TOT phone lines, so I think that limits DSL providers to TOT - or does it?

Anyone know about TOT business packages?

The TOT website seems to have absolutely no information on that, amazingly enough.

Their 2000/512 business package costs 4400 / month with supposedly guaranteed bandwidth. Its only available in certain areas on certain phones lines hence I am on the waiting list for this.

TOT do indeed have business packages, but it looks like you'll have to inform yourself at their office. Indeed not much to be found on their website!

BUT you are not limited to TOT as an ISP, In pattaya for example you can have bouth KSC and Csloxinfo through a TOT line. Inquire at the respective ISP's.

Indeed, Samart too, who have a promotion called (wait for it) "Wow Speedy" (**shudders**) 2000/512 package at THB 590 / month!

I have been using maxnet for about 1 year now in Pattya, yes it is very up and down, but when it is good, 'around midnight to 8 am,' it is good, and i can watch english tv through my slingbox back in the uk.

I need a service which can offer 512/256 ALL the time in pattaya? any suggestions peeps, or links to english version of thai web page, could not find it on Maxnet.

I have a router installed, and can pick up the signal 50 meters away, and have 3 english neighbours that would be able to pick up my router, so splitting the cost 3 ways seems viable, any suggestions again peeps? will thai isp figure out that 4 people are sharing a connection?

Forkinhades,

Upgrade to the Maxnet premier service.

If you plan on sharing costs, go for the fastest package available, but this will be subject of the distance to the telephone exchange wetter you'll get full speed or not...

Prices over here:

http://www.maxnet.co.th/product_Premier.php

It is quite bit more expensive, but much less people are sharing this line, so expect your speed to drop to 75% of rated speed on peak hours. It should seldom get slower then that!

On this package it is allowed to hook up several computers, it is normally used for small offices, s no worries about sharing!

Th upgrade is very straight forward, you'll get a new username/password immediately, which will give you access to the less shared servers. If a line speed upgrade is needed, this will take about 7 days, since some settings will have to be changed by the technicians at the telephone exchange you are connected to...

I don't think it would be easy to tell for the ISP, but do you really want to have to call your friends, or they call you every time you need more than the average 1/3 of the bandwidth? It is also specified in user contracts, at least for True HiSpeed, that this is not allowed. But not easy for them to tell I think no.:o There will be traffic to three different endpoints so only 512/3 would be available for each of you even if watching the same show I think. Not much for streamed broadcasts. Before I came to Thailand I learned of a setup sort of the other way around. There is something that is called a Dreambox and it lets you decode sattelite and stream it to your computer. If set up correctly and if your connection is fast enough for upload you can also stream it to friends over the Internet. Don't know if Dreambox is available in Thailand but I think they're assembled in Asia somewhere.

Cheers

My friends would not be streaming tv, they just use the net for emails, and doing ebay stuff :o , and i suppose the firewall in the router would work well...

I almost subscribed Samart's Wow. I called Samart trying to check out if such package is limited to viewing Thai websites (this is the first country i see having this restriction) and whether there is usage limit per month, however, he didn't seem to catch my question (I don't speak Thai, so....). Well, if there is no limit to both of my queries, then Samart's package seemed to be the best value for money. I am skeptical.... as it's almost half as cheap comparing to others.

I live in Khon Kaen and have had a fast connection for about three years. I pay 999 baht plus VAT (1068.93) and get the bill from CAT although it says 'Net Drive by T-Speed' against the charge.

When I connect it says 'DSL210 Dialup is now connected Speed 2.0Mbps'

Please could somebody explain a couple of things for me.

1. Is the (purported) 2.0mbps the upload or download speed ?

2. For about the same price I would get a 1024/512 Maxnet package. Is this equivalent to what I already have or would I be better off changing?

I live quite close to my exchange.

Thanks very much,

1024 = 1 meg, so would be half the speed you are getting now, do a broadband speedtest to see what speeds you are getting, there is a link in this forum

Can anyone provide the location in Pattaya of the Samart office?  telephone number?

Has anyone signed up for an ADSL account with Samart and what is your opinion of their service thus far?

Yes but you have to sign up for one year, or be fined 2500 baht if you leave the contract, sounds a bit like the maxnet scam.........
