Biden, seeking support of women, wins Hillary Clinton's endorsement

Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden reacts as former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton endorses him for president in a video screengrab made during a Biden campaign online town hall about the impact of COVID-19 on women run from Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S. April 28, 2020. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden won the endorsement on Tuesday of Hillary Clinton for the office she fell short of winning in 2016 in her bid to become the first woman elected as U.S. president.

The endorsement, at an online town hall on the effects of the coronavirus crisis on women, came at a critical moment as Biden aims to raise his profile with female voters and other key demographic groups even as the pandemic ravages the U.S. economy.

Clinton - a onetime secretary of state, U.S. senator from New York and first lady - suffered an upset defeat in the 2016 presidential election to Republican Donald Trump, despite winning the popular vote.

She also lost the 2008 Democratic presidential race to Barack Obama, whom Biden served as vice president.

Biden, who has vowed to pick a woman as his running mate this year, introduced Clinton at the town hall as the person who should be now be president.

Clinton told the former vice president: "I am thrilled to be part of your campaign to not only endorse you but to help highlight a lot of the issues that are at stake in this presidential election."

Clinton's defeat four years ago remains the source of anger and consternation among liberals, including some who wrestle with whether they chose the right candidate.

Women favored Clinton over Trump in 2016, exit polls showed, and are expected to play a critical role in swaying the most competitive swing states in the Nov. 3 election between Biden and Trump.

On Tuesday, Biden and Clinton promoted the need to define abortion as essential healthcare during the coronavirus pandemic and to provide subsidies to victims of domestic violence forced to take time off from work.

The former first lady's signature issue during the presidency of her husband, Bill Clinton, was healthcare reform, and her early career included advocacy on family and children's issues. Speaking on the webcast, she said women were disproportionately hurt by some of the consequences of the pandemic.

Biden agreed, adding that abortion was being used as "a political wedge" during the crisis. Some Republican-led states have sought to curb the procedure as part of their emergency response.

NOT IN DOUBT

In a statement responding to the endorsement, Trump's campaign manager, Brad Parscale, said: "There is no greater concentration of Democrat establishment than Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton together."

"President Trump beat her once and now he'll beat her chosen candidate," the statement added.

Clinton's support for Biden at this stage was never in doubt. Biden is widely supported by his party's establishment and his last remaining rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, dropped out earlier this month. Sanders has also endorsed Biden.

Sanders, a democratic socialist, clashed with Clinton over personality and ideology in their 2016 Democratic presidential race.

Clinton was Obama's first secretary of state. Biden decided against mounting a campaign against her in 2016 as he grieved the death of his son Beau.

Obama, the first black U.S. president, endorsed Biden's campaign two weeks ago after Sanders' withdrawal from the contest.

Looks like Trump will have to sack Pence and get himself a female VP to win the woman votes.

They'd get my vote for sure. The US could do a lot better than these two but it could also do a lot worse and a prime example is the disastrous duo currently in power.

Lesser of two evils, yeah, I suppose. I'm no fan of Trump. But there is just too much wrong with both these guys. A Bernie/Warren or Tulsi ticket would've been better.

IMO Sanders wouldn't have had a chance, even against a complete failure like Trump. He's just too left wing for the US.

Just imagine if that was the case and they won. Biden and Clinton - the dream team 555!

How long before dear old Joe was declared mentally unfit or met with an unusual and unfortunate accident?

The HC could secure the crown she thinks his rightfully hers!

I grant you ALL of what you say (although the sexual assault stuff has not been tried in a court of law). And yet, give us Biden ANY DAY rather than Trump who simply makes any thinking American embarassed when they are abroad to say they are American. Even the backpackers sew a Canadian flag to their luggage so as not to be identified as from the USA!

Yes it was a close race......just a little short on choices

A senile old git who prefers truth over facts.

A socialist who owns three houses.

And a fake injun who speaks with forked tongue.

I guess they went with the senile old git...............who told us at the beginning that the last thing we have to worry about is the Chinese

Joe Biden: Don't Worry About China, They're Cool.....................

Democrat Joe Biden downplays China's threat to the U.S. economy, says while stuttering, "They're not ther-ther-ther competition for us"

If Joe wins in November the most important person in his administration will be the Vice President(he has already promised to pick a woman).  Doubt Joe will be able to do much.  I’m not sure if he can finish his term.  Hilary has tried twice to become President  through the front door and failed miserably.  How about the VP route and then invoke the 25th Amendment and declare Joe as mentally incompetent?  Then her dream would finally come true.

Covid 19 and the aftermath will be the defining issue for the Presidential Election.   No matter what Donald has done or will do will matter much. No economy in the world will be able to mount any kind of meaningful recovery before November 2020.  The one time $1200 thank you payment to the American Taxypayer will be a distant memory by election time.  Also, it gets cold in the Northeast by November so a 2nd wave could hit by then and then a Joe Biden victory could become reality.  Let’s see how Joe deals with 5 Trillion added to the national debt along with slow economic growth.  A nation can only print so much money.  “Kicking can down the road” can only last so long before the can hits a brick wall.  The brick wall is coming up fast.

I hate to say it but if Biden DID go in with Clinton he'd have a real chance. It would be close IMHO but she's by far the best female candidate to keep him on track - unless Sarah Palin was still available?
