Post COVID-19 tourism in Thailand: Bargain travel deals and high quality tourists

The pristine beaches. The fabulous food. The mass cancellations and travel disruption.

Thailand’s tourism industry might be in disarray but now could be the best time to pick up some bargain travel deals - as long as you are prepared to wait.

It remains to be seen the long term impact the coronavirus will have on the tourism industry around the world.

But travel operators in the UK are already offering deals to Thailand for next year.

According to The Sun, Brits can fly to Thailand for just £387 return in February 2021.

Another flight operator is reportedly offering a 10-night trip to Thailand from just £477 per person, including flights and accommodation.

Flights in March 2021 from London Heathrow to Survanabhubi on Skyscanner range from around 16,000 baht, with cheapest flights around 13,000 baht.

International flights to Thailand are currently suspended until May 31, but tourism chiefs have said some international tourism could return to the country as early as June.

The news comes as the Thai government last week revealed plans aimed at attracting tourists once the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

One of the plans included the “Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration” campaign which aims to lift safety standards within the tourism industry in Thailand in order to boost confidence among international tourists.

Meanwhile tourism minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, announced plans to attract “high quality” tourists who can afford longer holidays in Thailand.

Phuket, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan will be used to attract the tourists, as the tourism ministry focuses on quality over quantity.

“Because those destinations are only reachable via limited gateways, provincial authorities can ensure thorough screening of incoming visitors and provide more comprehensive prevention measures against the potential import of the virus compared to other major destinations, such as Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai,” said Ratchakitprakarn.

Four and five star hotels will be used to promote packages to previous guests.

“The outbreak allows Thai tourism to shift its focus to quality tourists rather than quantity,” added Ratchakitprakarn.

Pay now - travel next year, when it maybe open, maybe not. Think I would pass.

I almost forgot, required corona virus insurance + clean bill of health from the doctor.

Thailand will be back, Pattaya too, but never like what it was.

They attracted the wrong kind of (countries) tourists. Western people was squeezed out, one way or another with visa restrictions - and many moved on, never to return.

The 'bizz' is gone, too many unsolved problems for western tourists, who now found their plan b in neighbouring countries.

Some will be back, many will not, discounts or not.

Seen a few cheap flights advertised in 10 months time, seems like a ponzi scheme to me,a lot of these airlines could very well go bankrupt before the start of your dream holiday.even when (if ) this pandemic subsides the knock on effect of the pucker factor (people's ars *****s) gone will be around for years.

So they come fall in love with the place or a girl and keep spending......great!

But after trip number three they then face the Spanish Inquisition at the airport and possible rejection and detention............. for wanting to keep visiting and spending money.

Thailands attitudes and policies need a post covid review!

Mate of mine booked a ticket in March to leave in a week's time, paid it on his debit card was told 2 days later his flights were cancelled, and would be receiving a refund ( minus £120 ) in 8 months time,if you are going to book one of these tickets at least use a credit (not debit ) card.

The hypocrisy of this so called tourism minister.  First we are called dirty farangs by ai Anutin, then farang tourists are grilled by Immigration.  Then Thailand lets everyone know they prefer low spending Chinese and Indians.

Now he wants to attract ‘quality’ tourists.  Quality in this context means high spending tourists.  How do you reconcile the preferred Chinese and Indians with high spending, sorry quality tourists?  Farangs have a long memory and in this age of social media bad word gets around pretty quickly.

hmmm....more comprehensive measures, eh?

how 'bout if we bring 'em back in groups, rather than as individual travelers!  keep 'em all together, like in a package tour, and keep them somewhat isolated from the community.  they can all stay in the same hotels, all eat at the same places and shop at the same stores, and of course all should travel together to the sights in the same buses.

in order to reduce the risk of infection, each group should have an ever-present minder to maintain order, preferably with an overly-loud megaphone and a stick with a wee, tiny stuffed animal tied to it.

Not to say Thailand is still not a great holiday destination for many, however you would have to be utterly mad to book a holiday to the other side of the world at the moment.
