Life's too short to be that scared they'd wear a mask in a bar/ gogo. BTW, how do you drink through a mask, and if you take it off to drink it is . They could put a plexiglass shield around the stage, but the girls make much of their money from sitting with customers to get a drink bought for them. They won't be happy if their income is greatly reduced. Expect higher prices or included service charge.

JohnBarleycorn
One commenter here stated that I should visit bars in Thailand in order to not miss out on the full Thailand treatment: Well, I got my fill of Beer and Broads at the Bottoms UP Club in Kowloon in the early 1980's. I grew tired of risking life and limb among drunken sailors on shore leave from US aircraft carriers anchored in Hong Kong harbor. Sailors frequently become impolite and disrespectful when they are three sheets to the wind. If Sailors drank nothing but weak Chinese green tea, then I might welcome their company. But, I have seldom seen American sailors drinking Chinese tea, especially tea grown in China. The commentor asked why I do not enter Thailand's Pattaya bars, gogo bars, or any bars. Maybe it is because I find tourists boring. And maybe I don't want to risk being hit over the head with a beer bottle, or worse. I am now happy as a clam in silt on the ocean bottom just the way I am. Just me and the Thai myna birds. Down here, underwater, stuck in mud, I can hardly hear or see the tourists, particularly now that all international flights have been cancelled for the near future. This is the way I like it. This is the way I like it.

Popular Post JohnBarleycorn
2 hours ago, Don Mega said: Better story than twilight. OK, then! If you liked my last story, here is another true story about Suzy-Wong-style sailors on shore leave off US navy warships in Hong Kong harbor, and why I found many of them objectionable in 1979 and the early '80s: There I was one early morning, around 00:30 hours, sitting at one of those large round outdoor tables on the sidewalks of Hong Kong, solely focused on slurping up a large bowl of Chinese beef noodles in red oily broth, with plenty of chili. Next thing I knew, a group of drunken American sailors weaved over and sat down uninvited at the opposite side of my table, a table designed to seat ten at weddings and funerals, you know the kind of which I speak. The table surface is a large round piece of plywood on top of a smaller supporting table underneath. These sailors were more thirsty than hungry. They were in too much of a collective stupor to really be able to order anything in the way of food. And also they didn't seem to be in want of drink. So after a few minutes of just sitting there and nodding off a bit, exactly the way heroin addicts often do, one naval brute became suddenly agitated and frustrated by his own stupidity and ignorance about the proper ordering food or drink etiquette in Hong Kong. So after a while, up he jumps, and then upends the table top on which my bowl of noodles rested. Chinese beef noodles are plenty oily and awfully red. The redness is derived from chili and other ingredients, all excellent products for dying clothes and even fine hand-tailored men's dress suits. So sudden were his actions, I was completely astounded and shocked to see this belligerent, stuporous brute-of-a-boy send my bowl of noodle soup splashing my finely-tailored jacket and soaking my trousers. It was a light colored suit, being that light colored cloth is good for the summer heat in Hong Kong. I think it was expensive cashmere wool, even now recollecting that Hong Kong meal, I am sure of it. I did not react and slug this boy, his being such an oversized brute. Instead, I went to one of the other less-drunken sailors standing around on the pavement and finally reported the incident to the Shore Patrol in charge of drunken sailors and other offending swabbies. I reported it, and I was promised that the suit would be cleaned at the Navy's expense. But people who qualify to be in the Shore Patrol know nothing of cleaning suits, and I knew that it would be impossible to clean Chinese noodle soup from cashmere wool. Impossible. And so, after a wasted meal, and about an hour of discussion with the man in charge, I went about my business looking for a few of the bars which nightly stay open until dawn, of which there were many. So there I was at around 02:30 hours, sitting on a bar stool, just drinking away, and of course by myself. There were plenty of sailors in all the bars that morning, and this was typically the case when aircraft carriers anchored in Hong Kong harbor. I think it must have been around Six Bells, or maybe even Seven Bells, when one of the sailors, surprisingly sober at that time of morning, walked over to me. What he said was, "You're not that guy who reported Numbnuts to the Shore Patrol, are you?" "Noooo," says I. "What do you mean?" So, he goes, "Well, if you are that guy, then you better not stay here. Numbnuts is trying to find the guy who reported him. Numbnuts wants to kill the guy. I'm serious, Man." I am not a fighter that enjoys fighting in bars so much. When I am in bars, I am there only to drink, and drink some more, usually until about Seven or Eight Bells, and then taxi home and have maybe another few beers before retiring for the day. This was my idea of fun at the time. And so, I decided to quickly leave Hong Kong island and return to Kowloon where there were plenty more bars, and where I knew that the Bottoms UP Club would be open for many more hours. During that period, in Kowloon, the Bottoms UP Club was open 24-7. All the girls there were forbidden to wear tops. They just sat there bored trapped inside their circular bars and poured drinks with their bosoms exposed, some large and some smaller. So, to the commenter here who asked me why I do not enter bars in Thailand, my reply is that I have had enough of drunkenness and debauchery to last me a lifetime. I came to Thailand for recuperation, and I have stayed for the culture here, which suits me. These days, in Thailand, I do not wear suits. And neither do I wear shorts. I always do my best to dress in such a way that I show respect for the Thai culture, norms, and mores of the local people who live in this beautiful city. In Thailand, especially in this fair city, I am not a tourist. In Thailand, I am a guest. I always try to show due respect in a place where showing respect is due and deserved. 2

I would need to think a while before recalling names, though I do recall experiences. One name I recall was the Apple. This was a below-ground disco in the early 90s. It had a large three-dimensional glass or plastic red apple hanging above the entrance door which was lit up from inside ---- quite unique. The clientele would drink until well after dawn, and after around 6 AM, when leaving the bar, I would need to step over drunken bodies lying just outside the entrance door. I always wondered how long they would lie there before waking up and stumbling home. Hong Kong was quite tolerant of drunken bodies lying around back then. But after the commies marched into Hong Kong around 1997, the UK crowd left the colony en masse, probably because government jobs dried up in a hurry, and that was when I became unable to buy Stilton cheese at many of the local shops. The inability to buy Stilton cheese and its sudden unavailability is one of the greater tragedies of the Hong Kong takeover by the CCP or the CPC, whichever. You would recall the bar should you have been in it. Rather than a bar, there were several beds, each surrounded by stools, where patrons could observe what happened on the bed. One assumes something erotic, but it could have just been a bargirl wearing a nightie lolling on the bed. Google gives me no satisfaction in this matter.
