Malta envoy to Helsinki resigns after comparing Merkel to Hitler

VALLETTA (Reuters) - Malta's ambassador to Finland resigned on Sunday after he came under fire for comparing German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Adolf Hitler, Malta's ministry of foreign affairs said in an emailed statement.

"When accepting the ambassador's resignation with immediate effect, Minister Evarist Bartolo stressed that the ambassador's comments on German Chancellor Angela Merkel were not representative of the friendship and mutual respect between Malta and Germany," the statement said.

Michael Zammit Tabona wrote in a Facebook post on Friday, the 75th anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe, that "75 years ago we stopped Hitler. Who will stop Angela Merkel? She has fulfilled Hitler's dream! To control Europe."

Zammit Tabona, a businessman and political appointee who was appointed in 2014, could not be contacted for comment.

Anyway. I hear Herr Merkels balls are much bigger than Adolf's were!!! ????????????????????????????????????????

Merkel is nothing like Hitler (although if you read his comments carefully he didn't actually say that she was, but it's the click-bait headline and over-reaction to it that ends careers these days).

His point (which contains some truth) is that Germany is attempting to exert control over Europe via it's high profile position within the European Union. Of course, it exerts it's influence through economic policies these days rather than brutal military force.

Don't know what kind ambassador he is. Never even live in Finland! But anyway who want live in my home coundry in winter time! Need to be crazy!

Your attempt to justify his words by blaming it on the evil media is disgusting.

Let's look at his words carefully.

1. 75 years ago we stopped Hitler. Depends who "we" is, but assuming he means the allies this is correct.

2. Who will stop Angela Merkel? This is a question. Do SJW's still allow questions to be asked?

3. She has fulfilled Hitler's dream! To control Europe. Hitler's dream was to control Europe, I would agree with this part. I would disagree that she has fulfilled this dream but it would be difficult to argue that Germany does not have significant influence over Europe via it's economics policies within the European Union.

His words were very undiplomatic. But to say that she has fulfilled Hitler's dream, whilst incorrect in my opinion, is not the same as comparing the two.

'Exert control' - Like every other country on the globe - otherwise their leaders and diplomats aren't doing their jobs.

the frustration with germany is all about economic policy - exchange and interest rates in particular - I would suggest that there be Southern and Northern Euro with different exchange rates and interest rates and policy. Athens and Valletta will never thrive if they have to operate like Germany economic policy.

And a most annoying and unjust remark. Angela Merkel is probably the best democratic leader in Europe, and she has done more for a unified, peaceful and democratic Europe than any other European politician since the founders of the forefathers of the present EU.

Rubbish. The continent of Europe was reunited after the mass demonstrations and efforts of the people of eastern Europe, primed by the new policies of Gorbachev.

I suggest the member was talking to Merkel's contributions leading up to and when she came to power. There is no doubt Merkel made a magnificent contribution compared to other EU leaders. As an example...

https://carnegieeurope.eu/strategiceurope/73195

Unfortunately Merkel has in recent years faced ever increasing difficulties from an alleged ally stirring the pot of right of centre populism. To date she has managed to keep matters relatively stable when compared to some of her neighbours such as Poland and Hungary. Whoever takes on the leadership of Germany will face some very tough times.

Would be a good suggestion, to have a better (financial) control over the Olive Belt. For decades they spend too much public money despite warning after warning. Taxing: every suggestion was striked away. With the merge of all into the Euro (1999) , agreed was: max 3% state deficit, and a 60% total state debt. But the Olive Belt even widened the gap. Financial ( banking ) crises 2008: warnings again, but.. got the thick middle finger as reply. Even big row end of 2018 about the AGAIN big deficit of Italy, but reply from the Clown Grillo and Mr Selfini: "burst". This time, it really hurts, and after 30-40 years earning, the misery comes to the surface. Never even a glimpse of solidarity from Italy especially, but NOW the Germanians have to show solidity and.. give HUGE amounts of money to the Olive Belt.

Forget it.

The Eastern European countries joined the EU for ONE and ONE reason only: EU funds...

Kohl convinced the Sovjest they were broke. That's why trailer after trailer with aid goods from the West went into the East.

Greece, Malta, Cyprus, Italy, Spain, will not thrive without massive EU aid. They can, and have never, been good at financial management. Corruption, high public spending, poor tax enforcement etc etc. Different mix in each country but same result.

Germany and the North West EU member states have been very, very tolerant. Because they could afford to be. Now maybe not so much.

Mneh, Hitler was Austrian. Wrong country to begin with.
