The Cabinet agreed on Tuesday (May 12) that December 4 will now be marked as “Unity Day”, in honour of a speech given by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great in 1991.

Government spokesman Narumon Piniyosinwat said the Cabinet had declared December 4 should be observed as the annual day of unity – though it will not be a public holiday.

Speaking on the eve of his birthday in 1991, King Rama IX stressed that without unity, the nation had no future.

I suspect Unity Day won't be much of a celebration in the former Kingdom of Patani.

Especially as it continues to operate under State of Emergency, unlike the rest of Thailand.
