The Transport Ministry’s deputy permanent secretary, Phisak Jitwiriyawasin, said on Wednesday (May 13) that stations between Kasetsart University and Wat Phra Si Maha That on the BTS Green (Sukhumvit) Line extension will be open within June, while the rest of the line ending at Khu Khot station should be open by December.

The extension began working in August last year when the stations between Mor Chit and Ha Yaek Lat Phrao were opened, followed by stations leading to Kasetsart University in December.

Phisak said the Green Line expansion project is being completed in line with the memorandum of understanding given to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

He also said that the bridges removed to make way for the Green Line will be reinstalled, but not necessarily in exactly the same place.

Is going to the end of the line then getting a cab to D.M. Airport a viable option?

The dark Green line; third map on this page: http://www.gregtodiffer.com/finally-a-mostly-real-map-of-bangkoks-transit-future/

The Nation mentions Wat Phra Si Maha That in June. Exit at that temple. A cab can turn left on Chaeng Wattana, then left on Vibhavadi (going south), 2 km -> take the U-turn bridge over Vibhavadi and -->Airport

When they open the rest in December: Exit Yaek Kor Por Aor Station, a cab (going north) will drive 3 km and turn left to get Vibhavadi Rangsit (going south).

Wat Phra Si Mahathat is very close to DM so, yes.

The next batch of stations scheduled to open in December will include Don Muang station.

I don't know how they could do that on the dark green line because there is the Royal Thai Air Force between Phaholyothin Rd and Don Mueang airport.

Don Mueang station is on the Red Line, over the highway from the DM passenger terminals. This BTS Green Line is on the other side of the airport, along the front of the RTAF base.

Getting from one of the tourist areas along the green line to the airport via Don Mueang red line would involve at least 2 changes of train. So the best option would be to one of the new Green Line stations and then taxi ...or perhaps they might even have the common sense to have a shuttle bus ?

Yes. Khukot station is on LamLukka Road, not far from the big junction at the end of LamLukka Road, opposite National Memorial. There are a few short cuts that taxi drivers would know too.

Also, getting off at the last but one station might also be an option. You'd be on the main road, on the right side of the road. But that would depend on traffic flow too.

There is a number of RTAF bases and properties in this area. There is a road which skirts around the base I think you're thinking of, and there is also a nice park there. Members of the public used to be able to buy a permit, low cost, which enables you to use the road, very good short cut. We had one for a few years some time ago, and used to go to the park too.

Permits are still available to the public for the shortcut through the airport. 100 baht, ask at the checkpoint. It's a very handy way of getting from Viphavardi / Rangsit Rd to Pahonyothin Rd. The park has just reopened. You don't need a permit for that. It's a nice place to walk or cycle round, if you're in the area.
