My neighbors dog

Featured Replies

I live in a remote area where everyone is driving a car or a motorbike.

The closest shop is about 500 metre from here.

When the gf is not home and the car is not available I find myself in a worry when wanting to go to the shop for some refreshments.

Its this one house that keep giving me problems. Two Thai dogs which are very aggressive. Have to pass them in a narrow street to get by, but they do their best to deny me. They are very aggressive and keep going at me as soon I am 5-10 metre close. They are more than ready to bite.

I had enough of these two douchebags refusing me to live my life as I want, and consider what to do with them.

To give them a go with a bat in the middle of the day seems a bit over the top as neighbor might not like, so I consider what else I can do to get these two a-hooles to give me the peace I want.

Ideas?

Not a lot you can do about it.   I advise NOT talking to neighbours or anyone about it, because if you do and anything happens to the dog in the future, they will all think you did something

Pretty sure this will be closed  ..but Thailand has recently introduced draconian animal protection laws

you can have big trouble if caught killing a dog !!!!!!

Why not just talk to their owner about them being a safety problem for you?

have you considered speaking with the neighbor who owns them...

Also, if you just use your hands and pretend like you have a slingshot, pulling back the string, they might leave you alone...

get a water pistol or spray bottle and fill with water and bleach, a few squirts in the face should make them back off, I actually bought an extendable steel baton a few years ago that will drop a dog very quickly if I connect with them due to a group of dogs that would try to attack me from behind, havent had to use it yet but it is quite compact when not in use and attaches to you pants, (snip) that I have used, they take off pretty quick when hit in the butt

I also used to have problem with some dogs in the beginnings. But it's all just a confidence game. Take baby steps, get confidence. And once you have it all dogs in entire Thailand will leave you alone. As they do with all Thai people. Which wouldn't take anything from a street dog. problem is that you are scared of them... .

Changed the head-line. It was wrote in anger and frustration. It was out of line, indeed.

The owner never seem to be home at these hours. At least I haven't seen him around in the daytime.

Wellington boots, and a stout stick.....????

I understand you very good because I also hate the barking and attacking street dogs and untrained private dogs.

Carry a large stick with you, Usually they are afraid of it. Talking with the owner (you or better your wife) is also a good option.

My experience of dog owners that let their dogs out on the street like this here is that they will not take gladly to you informing them about their dogs being a problem to you.  They won't care or do anything.

Best advise is buy another scooter to get past them.

If you hit them with a stick or throw anything at them and someone sees you, you will be in big trouble.  If you kill them that is totally illegal and cruel.

You might try buying a cheap bag of dog food and when you have to walk past the house, actually call to the dogs in a friendly way, and throw a handful of the food onto the ground away from you...  after a few times doing this the dogs should actually like you coming past as they know they will get food.

Also stand up straight, act normally, don't shout or yell, and walk at normal pace.  If you show you are scared or act aggressive, that will set the dogs off.

Good luck.

dogs are supposed to be locked in their yards by law as well, if they are roaming the street then the owner is at fault and you can lodge a complaint with the police etc. One of our neighbours used to let his dog wander the street, it was not friendly plus crapped all over the street but after we had an argument about it he got the police  involved thinking because he was thai he was in the right but we had a video of it all & the police told him he had to keep it inside his property or if not on a leed, rarely see it these days, you are allowed to protect yourself if they attack though and their owner is then responsible as well

Speak to the owner, get the wife/gf to fo it. If that doesnt work, next call is Pu yai Baan.

Water pistol is also a good suggestion, as above.

Yes, I completely agree with you Andy. Barking dogs are not aggressive dogs, they're just being defensive  Folks often misinterpret their behaviour. I live in a village full of dogs and now that they know me, not one of them give me any problem at all.

Like you say, it's all a matter of confidence and above all, show no aggression yourself. Show none, you'll get none. I never carry anything that looks like a weapon.

as mentioned .... don't try talking to the owner because if something happens to his dogs he will come straight after you.

Walk with stout 6' bamboo walking stick

and do not look at them eye to eye..to do

that, they perceive you're challenging them.

Slow your pace to a nonchalant stroll.

Stare them out holding the stick, theyll drop eye contact when they finally fear you  more.

Alternatively, get some doggie treats.

Those small (2"long) bone shaped hide thingies are cheap and will keep them occupied for a while.

After a while you will be their best friend ????

I think in reality ...

Option E is get 7-11 delivery of your beer so you don't have to go out.

Option F is relocate.

I find that ignoring them completely usually, in fact always does the trick.

You could try saving some food scraps, and putting them on the floor when you walk past?

Ive never come across a street dog in this country that can't be bribed ????

I'm a cyclist. I use the water bottle idea mentioned above, but with vinegar, not bleach. Bleach could blind a dog, and is a hassle to you if a few drops get loose. If I get a dog in the eyes with vinegar, they never bother me again. It gives them something to think about for half an hour or so, but causes no permanent harm. Plus, if someone sees you spray it, you can claim it's water. Nobody's going to sniff the dog or the ground to prove you wrong.

Above is when I'm biking. For walking, I carry an old golf club shaft with no head. You don't have to hit a dog for it to be effective. Brandish it. If they're still threatening, swing it fast, so that it makes a whistling sound moving through the air.

A bulglar on TV said the best is to spray ammonia on their nose. That will keep the dogs busy for a while.
