UK plans cut in Huawei's 5G network involvement - newspaper report

(Reuters) - Prime Minister Boris Johnson is planning to reduce Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's involvement in Britain's 5G network in the wake of the coronavirus crisis, the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported https://bit.ly/2zmI2DE.

Johnson has asked officials to make plans to reduce China's involvement in British infrastructure to zero by 2023, the newspaper reported late on Friday.

Johnson is expected to use less reliance on China as a means to boost trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump in the aftermath of Britain's departure from the European Union, according to the newspaper.

Downing Street declined to comment. Huawei did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Earlier on Friday, The Times reported that Johnson has instructed civil servants to make plans to end Britain's reliance on China for vital medical supplies and other strategic imports.

Beijing is being criticised for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, which began in China. Beijing denies U.S. allegations it has not been transparent about the outbreak.

"He (Johnson) still wants a relationship with China but the Huawei deal is going to be significantly scaled back. Officials have been instructed to come up with a plan to reduce Huawei's involvement as quickly as possible," a source was quoted by the Telegraph as saying.

The development would be a change of direction for Britain, which in late April confirmed it would allow Huawei to have a role in building its 5G phone network.

Britain decided in January to allow Huawei into what the government said were non-sensitive parts of the network, capping its involvement at 35%.

The United States has raised security concerns about Huawei equipment, and warned that allies that use it in their networks risked being cut off from valuable intelligence sharing feeds.

That´s a good decision Boris! Now you really helped the development of technology in the aftermath of the virus. Frankenstein comes to mind.

I have to instinctively take notice of a member who has a MK1 Lotus Cortina avatar .. even if they do appear to live in Pataya.

As  for Huawei being involved in the 5G rollout .. no roll .. just out out out

So you believe the Huawei CEO when he states they are free from Chinese government interference and would never ever do anything unethical?

Frankenstein's monster's brain comes to mind.

Why would I need to believe that? It´s the modern and the high quality technology they are after, nothing else. After that it´s up to the customer to have control of the system and protect themself.

If you in anyway are trying to put any talk about responsibility of the virus into this, it will neither have any place. The only thing we are talking about is a product and a buyer. That has nothing to do with the Chinese government or who we wish to blame the virus on.

So is the telegraph insinuating covid-19 prompted this change of heart?

Yeah right.

Absolutely correct. The Huawei CEO is flat out lying. Furthermore...the CEO doesn't have any choice in the matter. Huawei is obligated by Chinese law to share everything with the Chinese government and to act as an agent of Chinese Intelligence. This cooperation is legally mandated in the National Intelligence Law of the P.R.C. (2017).

Article 7: All organizations and citizens shall support, assist, and cooperate with national intelligence efforts in accordance with law, and shall protect national intelligence work secrets they are aware of.

China will regret forever the releasing of WuFlu upon the world.

Regarding reliance on Chinese products, after checking down on Ebay and Lazada and noticing that 97% of goods for sale are from China, one can only wonder what the other consumer item manufacturing countries are doing ? After buying a "Made in China" power bar recently and plugging in a small kettle, there was an immediate explosion and puff of smoke. A destructive investigation revealed that the internal copper wiring was slightly thicker than a human hair, which incidentally is very good for reducing cost of manufacture and hence the competition ????

Saw this recent photo in the Cambodian press which interested me. It was taken at a ceremony to open a new section of the highway linking Sihanoukville with Phnom Penh - look at the road signs in Khmer and English!!

Whole world was already a little nervous about the Chinese governments bullying and aggressive behaviour even before the virus.   Not to mention stealing industrial secrets etc..

Their behaviour during the virus is equally concerning, concealing information, and threatening/mocking countries wanting an independent inquiry, and trade restrictions as punishment for calling for an inquiry.

The final cost of the virus needs to be compared to the economic benefits of trade relationships.  Many countries have found themselves with too many eggs in the China basket, and many will now be looking for alternatives.  Quite plausible the resultant trade reductions will be the catalyst for the inevitable burst of the Chinese economic bubble.  And only themselves to blame.

The tragedy is that China ever got to be so essential. Everything, IMO, to do with greed and the 1%'s desire to get even richer by exploiting workers in other countries.

Hopefully this is the beginning of the end for China's dominance. They are not "good guys", as is becoming ever more apparent.

This could - should - be China's Chernobyl moment, when it no longer becomes possible to pretend that the regime is in any way a force for good.

Ha ha ha. Don't be daft. As you, very correctly, state - 'to do with greed' - is the nub of the problem. Do you seriously think that this dogwhistle virus has changed the minds of the greedy? NO, of course it hasn't, it has merely given them opportunities to make even more money. Is Apple suddenly going to announce that all their phones and components are going to be non-Chinese within 2 years? No, because they wouldn't make half as much as people wouldn't be prepared to pay a 50% 'greed surcharge' on the price and the market won't be happy to hear that their profits will be severely reduced. Same applies to any company dependent on Chinese components. They are all complicit. They all use them because it increases their profit and now you want to kill that profit by forcing them to use expensive substitutes. Political dogma will do more damage to the economy than any virus. There is still no vaccine for idiotic political dogma expected soon.

China has also been building the largest navy in the world, along with buying and developing all the military technology they can get their corvid fingers on.

That's right, do away with them until the Chinese People rise up and kill the communists.  They deserve nothing short of a slow death.

Chinese citizens are pretty content with their quality of life which is higher ranked than Italy and only 2 levels below USA. By 2025, China will overtake USA GDP. Don’t you know that they now socialist with capitalist characteristic with a central government. Maybe you should find out the definition of communist. Educational.

What does it matter ? I thought all the cell towers were burned down due to causing the virus..

That would be quite the task for the world to try let alone the people of the nation (if they chose to), folks better realize they're positioned better than anyone presently, especially if the western nations don't test/trace their way to a clearer understanding of where they stand with infection rates. I believe going forward opportunities will open for them to lead the world in many areas while the west keeps floundering. A vaccine will even the playing field though the head start they gain may be insurmountable..

Nonsense.

Stadtler had to read this twice so he could order it properly in his head.  The world is awake now.  The world sees China clearly.  Cheap trinkets in Walmart will no longer suffice to abrogate our sovereignty.  Other countries are following the USA and soon China will be put into their own coffin as the world shuns them.

Down with Communists.  Stadtler hates them.

Yup, almost as content as the North Koreans.

In the 2019 North Korean elections, voter turnout was reported at 99.99%, and that "unanimously" the voters cast their ballots in favor of the registered candidates, ie Kim Jong-Un and his toadies.
