Coronavirus 'cover-up' is China's Chernobyl - White House adviser

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top White House official on Sunday likened China's handling of the coronavirus outbreak to the Soviet Union's cover-up of the meltdown at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986.

National security adviser Robert O'Brien said Beijing knew what was happening with the virus, which originated in Wuhan, from November but lied to the World Health Organization and prevented outside experts from accessing information.

"They unleashed a virus on the world that's destroyed trillions of dollars in American economic wealth that we're having to spend to keep our economy alive, to keep Americans afloat during this virus," O'Brien said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"The cover-up that they did of the virus is going to go down in history, along with Chernobyl. We'll see an HBO special about it ten or 15 years from now," he added, referring to a television miniseries.

The disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, in the former Soviet republic of Ukraine, released radioactive nuclear material that killed dozens of people within weeks and forced tens of thousands to flee. Moscow delayed revealing the extent of what is regarded as the worst nuclear accident in history.

U.S. President Donald Trump regularly complains about China's handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

China has denied the accusations against it, and its top diplomat on Sunday accused the United States of spreading lies and attacking the country.

"This is a real problem and it cost many, many thousands of lives in America and around the world because the real information was not allowed to get out," O'Brien said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "It was a cover-up. And we'll get to the bottom of it eventually."

Sanitation and Chinese never mix together. It is always the Chinese restaurants that get citations for violation of sanitation from the health department. And they have no shame about their filthy standard. It is no surprise that the epidemic started in China in this modern era.

However, there is not even a word of apology or admitting its faults. On the contrary they exert best effort to blame other countries for whatever reason. I saw that identical attitude from a Chinese lady who I recently had contact. They will never admit for their sub-standard culture of sanitation and feel no shame about it.

No. The WHO (and everybody else) knows the Chinese official line is to be taken with a large pinch of salt, as per their history. The WHO eagerly lapped up every lie from China without questioning anything. The Trump administration is absolutely right to hound both the WHO and China for their appalling behavior that has led to 350,000 deaths so far. Political idealism and sycophancy towards like minded leaders at should have no place among the WHO leadership.

It comes as a relief that the obvious cover-up scenario is now finally being aired in public. Brings to mind another lie. The official narrative about a bat coronavirus emanating by chance in a market outside a bat coronavirus laboratory which is still far fetched, to put it mildly.

Interesting trump supporters never mention trump 15 times (refer below) articulated his public support for XI regards Covid even though trump had received reports from his own agencies of the dangers. Just never ending deny and deflect in the exact same manner as trump. It was trump's lack of prompt actions and errors of judgement which has led to the current awful total of 100k deaths in the US. There are analysis if trump had acted earlier a large number of lives would have been saved.

In the meantime trump's push back against his own team's guidelines is now leading to dangerous outbreaks of infection and death in rural Red areas. e.g.

Perhaps you don't understand at the time WHO was refused entry to China for investigation. WHO eventually gained entry, with US nationals on the team, & published their detailed advisory report a very short time later on 28/02/20. When one reads the recommendations for the international community it is blindingly obvious the trump administration was slow to move. Accordingly enough of the blame game denials by trump and co.

This is a thread about the Chinese communist party covering up the flu that originated in Wuhan. You have more than 10,000 threads since 2016 to write anti-Trump/America/democracy hate speech on.

No its not. Its about a trump crony blaming china for a coverup. Even though trump was part of the coverup by thanking Xi for being transparent.

I was responding to your comments regarding trump and WHO. No hate speech / anti democracy stuff which BTW is trump's forte, but responding to the usual deflection / denials of responsibility by trump and his supporters.

Nature.

Taking into account that the virus exposed itself in China for the first time then I think China did it very well to fight it specially because they had to start from scratch. Identifying the virus and put the gene structure on the internet in no time.

So let me get this straight:

The Chinese local government lied to their own people, to WHO and to their superiors for between 5 and 6 days, covering up the information concerning the virus.

Trump covered up the effect of the virus for 5 weeks from February 1st - even before that, his own advisor wrote him a memo (late January) predicting the possible effect of an uncontrolled outbreak, including the economic effects.

Call it whatever way you want but lying to your own people for 5 weeks counts more for me!

I mean, do you realise that more Americans have died from this virus than ALL the folks who died during all conflicts since WW2 combined?

What you seem to forget is that at the same time the WHO was “eagerly lapping up every lie” told by the Chinese, so was Donald Trump who was praising President Xi for his response to the epidemic. If the WHO is guilty, so is Trump.

"U.S. President Donald Trump regularly complains about China's handling of the coronavirus outbreak."

Let us not forget he was effusive in praising China earlier for their prompt handling of the outbreak

At the very least, China was aware of the outbreak whereas Trump was for the most part, oblivious: paid no attention to intel, health sectors, etc fed absurd lines of "we've got this under control: 12 cases and soon be gone" sort of nonsense.

And now he is trying to deflect all the anger over his incompetence onto China.

"I take no responsibility" one of few honest statements he has made

I absolutely agree with you on every point.

That's why it puzzles med that everybody from Europe, US and Australia can't get enough of their sub-standard exports and even moves their production to this communist regime.

I know it's about profit, but where has that lead us? I think many profits are lost during this pandemic, so hopefully people will use their brain and not only think about their wallet when shopping in the future.

Absolutely. The Russian cover-up was a "little white lie" compared to what the Chinese are doing.

covid.jpg

While Trump has his own Three Mile Island meltdown.

But compare American deaths approaching 100,000 from covid-19 to Chernobyl deaths of 31-16,000 if all of Europe and Russian populations are included in subsequent long-term radiation affects.

Trump gives himself 10 out of 10 for his performance .?.?

If you think China'a Wuhan virus is a good thing for the world--buy Made in China.

If you don't--seek out other sources.

Would you say the same thing

if Nature had chosen to make this virus appear in your country?...

History will show that the warnings forthcoming to the US had Trump pushing them under the carpet for way too long a period of time as did the other funny haircut idiot across the pond

Imagine if liberals were honest enough to note that there were still personnel in China for that purpose. Imagine if liberals could debate any political topic without somehow whining about and/or dragging Trump into it.

Give them time. Soon, they'll find the two Trump voting, Confederate flag-waving Americans that started the outbreak.
