Home at last! "Starving and mistreated" British pensioner back in England "eating nonstop"

The 86 year old man who relatives and a rescuer claimed was starved and mistreated by a Thai family has made it safely back to the UK.

It was all smiles at Suvarnabhumi in Bangkok and the airport in London as the nightmare of Ron (surname withheld) came to an end.

The pensioner was rescued by a kind hearted Liverpudlian after a desperate appeal by his family on a Bangkok expats forum.

Ron was found sleeping in a shabby upstairs room on a pile of pallets. It is claimed that his ATM had been used by a Thai family siphoning off his pension.

Daughter Marion Phillips said: "Dad is home in Brighton and staying with me.

"He's been chatting and eating nonstop but he's happy and safe.

"He would love to visit Thailand (again) one day and meet up with the man who saved him".

That is Declan Theodore who kindly responded to the Facebook plea last week. No police were involved.

Ron was rescued from a house in Samut Sakhon and stayed briefly near Hua Hin before a crowd fund appeal enabled him to fly back to England.

He had been in Thailand for seven years and had one good relationship with a Thai woman before another turned sour.

He then moved south from Udon and his problems started.

He's lucky he was worth more to them alive than he would have been had he died.

What a sad and pathetic story. Goes to show that with age doesn't necessarily come wisdom.

a story that ends well, even if he would have liked to end his life in his adopted country.

So why did he go to Thailand when he was well-treated in UK? At 86, he shouldn't be looking for Thai women.

Yes, but of course. Now we must think that this is a big risk if living in Thailand, and that many cases like this exist everywhere. This was bad people that absolutely shall not be identified to present the greater group of Thais or Thai women. Why are you posting such silly things that we are just human ATMs? That is just a tell-tale that has been made up of people that visit Thailand and starts unhealthy relations with Thai bar girls a.k.a. hookers. That is a part that has absolutely no relation or connection with the real Thailand and the genuine Thai people. Exactly same difference that it is in your home country between a hooker and a person living a so called normal life.

No police involved - of course!

Why would they?  IT's bad press.  It was just a "misunderstanding".  Amazing Thailand, LOL!

Nice to see everything has worked out well for him. I would have thought perhaps he and his daughter would have been in contact thruout the years. And great for the gentleman to pay his airfare home. Kudos.

If you Google his name it comes up with several results of people accusing him of various things.

What a bunch of dropkicks.

We are not discussing the 'real Thailand' nor bar girls nor hookers.

We're discussing what happened to one particular octogenarian who'd decided to live out his remaining years in Thailand. We're giving our opinions on the matter and we should all be aware that the same treatment could one day be doled out to any elderly ex pat retirees in the LOS.

Read the title of this topic. That's what we're supposed to be commenting on.

Agreed. Unfortunately, too many have their views shaped by relationships with bar girls.

As a backpacker, I was travelling up from the South on a train, Whilst on the train, I for some reason, decided to change my destination to Bangkok instead of Samui. But I didn't have enough cash on me.

A Thai male nearby put his hand in his pocket and paid the excess. I had to insist on paying him back, even though he he showed no interest in getting the money back. Met up with him on the Khaosan Road later to at least give him the money back.

But of course for me it was more than the money. It was that he was willing to help a stranger.

This is but one example.

What rubbish, many Thai women can be trusted.

My wife i trust 100%, not only does she know my pin, many times i give her my card.

She takes money out of the ATM for me regularly, never once taken 1 baht.

Gosh - you must be a nice fella to be around! Can't stand people having an opinion, eh?
I extend my opinion to include you too, since you asked for it.

A few years back I helped a guy in a similar situation, although not so serious and he did make it back to the UK too. On the other hand, I personally know two guys who were "topped" when they tried to leave with their money.

I am not quite 86, but you need to find a woman to trust before you get old, or get the flock outter here.

Same goes for my Thai wife. She regularly goes to the ATM on her own, with my card. Never had a problem.

In fact her whole family are great. I recently had an illness which put me in hospital for a few days. When it was time to leave I did not have enough money to pay the bill, so her family helped out.
