Cambodian naval bases are not exclusive to China, says Premier Hun Sen

Cambodia’s naval bases in its southern coast are opened for visitations and joint naval exercises for any in the world and are not exclusive to the Chinese. “There is also no exclusive agreement in place for the Chinese navy to use our bases as we practice sovereignty and do not grant such rights to anybody, Mr Hun Sen during a visit to the southern coastal province of Sihanoukville.

He added that repeated allegations in western media and Washington that Cambodia has granted exclusive naval base rights to Chinese are absolutely nonsensical and that this has been reiterated time and again on numerous occasions.

The premier stressed that the Cambodian Constitution does not allow foreign military bases to be established on its soil. Hun Sen questioned what benefit Beijing would get from having a base in Cambodia while it already has bases in the South China Sea, to the east. China”s bases were established in waters that are also claimed by other Southeast Asian countries.
