Covid-19: "Hi-So" face shields on their own are pointless, says leading Thai public health official

A Thai health spokesman had a clear message for people who have abandoned face masks and are just wearing face shields:

 

Don't!

 

Dr Thanarak Phaliphat, speaking to the press in the daily Covid-19 briefing at the Health Department, said that there was a growing trend for people to abandon regular face masks and wear face shields only. 

 

He said this offered no protection at all and he strongly advised against it. 

 

He reiterated that people should continue to wear surgical masks or cloth masks whenever they go out to stop the spread of the coronavirus. 

 

An increasing number of people have been seen out in Bangkok wearing just shields - many look more like a fashion statement and are being worn by those that can obviously afford what they mistakenly believe is a better form of protection against infection.

told I was talking rubbish by a few very smart people on TVF

Dr Fauci has said on tv they are acceptable as a replacement for a face mask as long as they go below the chin and back to just in front of the ears and this a man who knows what he is talking about .

Human nature. Even in crisis, people feel the need to differentiate themselves to show they are ‘better’.

i am saving up for a face lift, not a face mask. 

It’s a splash guard. Unless people are going around coughing and sneezing in other people’s faces, your regular face mask is fine. 

I went into Big C a couple of days ago.

The cashiers have been issued with face masks and also face shields. I noticed three out of the four cashiers had their face shields pushed up above their faces, on top of their heads. Pretty pointless having them.

 

Also went to Udon hospital yesterday. My wife took her niece who had a fever which developed during the night.

No face shields being worn, but two members of the hospital staff had no face masks at all. Another one had their face mask pushed down under their chin.

Real health professionals.

Then why are health workers in US and UK wearing them.

they can stop infections that can enter via the eyes,but what

do I know,compared to Thai health spokesman.

In the UK and US, are they wearing the face shields instead of face masks though, or as well as?

Hospitals and joe public are completely different scenarios

There are protocols in hospitals and PPE is used properly, then disposed of properly afterwards

If you're worried, go full hazmat

They're only "pointless" if viewed in the context of attempts to prevent the virus spreading.

 

If you look at them in a couple of other socio-economic contexts, and consider the penchant for authoritarianism in certain circles, they are actually quite a coherent package.

Face shields the "benz" of covid-19 protection. 

The point is to stop you from touching your face. 

 

I guess it's been so long they've forgotten the basics.

if there was anything that remotely resembled a consistent effort everywhere than i may be on board with some of the things they are barking on about.

 

from being out and about on a regular basis all over bangkok the consistencies in the rules etc are top notch. it is laughable the whole track and trace nonsense. any sort of consistency and i may support it a tiny bit. please though.

 

i watched a handful of people walk right into makro today and they didn't even glance at the sign in or scan. 

 

was at the post office the other day and 4 of the 5 staff processing parcels either had no mask on or were chinning it. or my favorite the one ear dangle. heaven forbid i try to enter without a mask on right ?
 

took 2 mini bus rides the other day. 1st bus every other seat. 2nd bus cram em in.  

 

the 7/11 near my house has simply left the sign in and scan table outside along with the hand gel and thermometer. no one is manning the station anymore. 

 

my wife was rubbing shoulders with half a dozen thai fighting over oranges at makro. i put her outside for 2 weeks to make sure she doesn't have the wuwu.

 

as soon as it gets dark a large number of people living in and around my area are ditching their masks completely. bravo thai people. 

 

i could go on and on with examples but we all know whats going on.

Maybe he should turn on the TV as several local programs and game shows are using these face shields only. 

Something we all knew. They handle money and pick their noses. Surely not a safe situation. Now they are requiring all but white people to "sign in" at some stores after a temperature check. This does not jive with the Deputy Prime Minister's claim that "caucasians" are spreading Covid 19. Are these people for real??????? What on EARTH can they be thinking???

Any virus particles that are aerosolised won'y move in a straight line and thus able to get under the shield.

"Pointless" is not a noun.  But, being an adjective, it could be used to describe a lot of posts here!

You obviously haven't watched anything on how the droplets travel from the mouth when talking /sneezing or coughing , they travel straight out for some distance and if your wearing a face shield they will hit and drop straight down as has been shown in tests .
