OK, a few qualifiers. I'd like a camera, a music player would be nice but don't care about FM radio. Expandable memory is a must. GPRS is a requirement and EDGE would be even better. I'd like to be able to use it for internet on the phone as well as a modem with my laptop for when our phone is down or extremely bad (like now--the buzzing and cracking is so bad dial up barely works).

Being a girl, I'd like something that closes or covers up the keypad as I want to be able to put this phone in my purse without the screen getting damaged or it accidentally dialing someone up because I forgot to lock the keypad. Not too concerned with a trendy look or colors however.

I'd like something reliable that won't break easily.

Is there such a phone out there for me?? Nokia has good phones but aren't well known for good quality flip phones. What about Samsung? Anyone have one of these? Sony have a good flip or slider phone?

I have an i-mobile phone about 8 months old. 128 mb internal memory with an extra card slot for the small memory cards. I have seen thoes small cards go up to 2 gb.

I load my phone up with MP3s. It also has a video recorder/player, FM radio, internet and use as an internet connection etc, etc.

I like i-mobile because they offer about the same as Nokia but a lot less expensive.

They even have one phone that has an 8MB camera on it and another phone has a TV tuner. Find an i-mobile shop and check it out.

If the cam needs to take pics.. Get a SE790 and get a see through plastic hard case for 50 baht..

No scratches, great MP3, takes m2 cards up to 2GB, best cam I have seen in a cell..

My hubby has the N70, I prefer a flip or slider phone to the candybar style of most of the N series

I just got a Samsung SGH-E690. Sweet little flip phone with a good solid feel to it. It has a Edge/GPRS, it's triband, Bluetooth, with a camera, video, MP3 player, FM radio. I bought it in MBK for about 4000 baht and added a 1GB flash memory card. Apparently the latest of the latest phones in that price range. So cutting edge that my European provider doesn't recognize it and won't sell me a ring tone for it that I'd like to have. :o

I thought I didn't need the FM radio either, but I find myself using it more than I thought I would.

Maybe like this one > http://www.tohome.com/product_detail.aspx?..._id=20070100129

Shows GPRS & Edge support. Though camera is a bit on the low res side.

Personally my choice would be the SE k790i but it is also a candy bar model. As for accidentally pressing a call button, it has an automatic lock.

automatic lock? in what way? With Nokia you have to push a couple of buttons in order to lock the keypad, which, frankly, I find a tad annoying. Call me lazy :o

For the k750i that I have you can either press the * then 'Lock Keys' or you can go to the Settings page and select Automatic Lock and after a few seconds of no key activity will automatic go into Lock Key mode. Nice feature because I carry my phone in my pants pocket.

In regards to the SE auto lock, it's a pretty good feature.

I have a SE P910i (not what you're looking for) an it has an auto lock feature that when i close the flip (after using it as a PDA) it automatically locks the key pad. takes 2 button hits to unlock and i'm back in business or just open up the flip.

My wife used to have an SE S700 and it to had the lock so I assume it's a SE feature.

In the 2 above phones i mentioned the lock had a user variable setting e.g. auto lock after 30 sec of inactivity. You set the time limit throw it in your bag and not worry about pocket/purse dialing somebody.

I don't have any experience with Samsung or LG but in terms or menue system and usability I like SE over Nokia and Moto is crap.

when looking at a phone pay attention to editor reviews and especially user reviews.

Check out cnet.com for reviews, and if it's too new or asian specific try Cnet-Asia

sbk, since you're a girl, don't you also want an oven, a makeup kit, and a 200-channel TV set to go with the phone, camera, GPRS, radio and internet?

I'm just kidding. My male Thai partner gave me his old phone, and I expect to find the chainsaw and the 9-inch spanner in there soon.

Sbk I would suggest you ask one of those Hi-So young Thai Ladies what they use, they seem to have the knowledge ..

Can't say that I know too many of those on my little island :o

Besides, do you think they worry about using their phone as a modem?

How about the Motorola Razr? It is a flip top phone, has camera, mp3, video and voice recorder. I am sure it can be used as a modem but I haven't tried it yet. Has a memory slot as well...check it out on the motorola website for full specs. All in all, I am pleased with mine.

Have heard lots of bad reviews of the Razr from guests. I'd say most were unhappy with theirs after a period of time.

Well, off to Samui tomorrow to have a look, don't think I'll buy just yet as my phone isn't quite dead yet :o
