Cabinet allows migrant workers to work in Thailand until July 31, 2020

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - A meeting of cabinet ministers has resolved to allow migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar to work in Thailand until July 31, 2020, to help reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus disease 2019, and to maintain a workforce as the situation gradually improves.

 

The Government Spokeswoman, Prof. Dr. Narumon Pinyosinwat, said that the cabinet meeting agreed to allow migrant workers from Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar to stay and work in Thailand until the end of next month. Previously, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Labor had allowed them to stay and work in the kingdom until May 31 this year.

 

With disease-control measures still in force, the Ministry of Labor called a meeting of various units, such as the Immigration Bureau, the Division of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Permanent Secretary for the Interior and the Department of Provincial Administration.

 

They resolved that the migrant workers from the three neighboring countries can stay and work in Thailand between June 1 and July 31. They include two groups of workers.

 

The first group is Cambodian, Lao and Myanmar workers with work permits issued under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on labor issues. The second group is Cambodian and Myanmar workers carrying a border pass in accordance with Section 64 of the Thai law.

 

This decision will reduce the risk of laborers contracting and spreading COVID-19, prevent later labor shortages and support economic restoration after the COVID-19 situation improves. The Ministry of the Interior will issue an announcement in accordance with the cabinet’s resolution.

And that is all its about.

 

Nothing to do with Covid19, they don't want to be short of labour in lousy jobs that Thais do not want and they don't want to pay for food and transportation to get them back home.

 

Damn all to do with containing the virus.

 

If that was the case, and they were really concerned about the virus they would pay more attention to the squeezes outside their banks of up to three hundred people trying to get the 5,000 baht or the jammed markets and shopping malls.

 

No point operating social distancing inside the banks when you have the equivalent of packed together like sardines outside it, and using loudhailers to try and control the masses.

Couldn't they have finalized the extension from May 31 to July 31 some time in May?

 

I'm sure the uncertainty caused many migrant workers undue stress, some might even have tried to cross the border back to their homeland illegally. Totally unnecessary.

Not sure if it would crumble. Too many people now outta work, soecially from the tourism business. They easily could fill in these places, just would have to start really working and not playing with heir phones during woking hours

I fear many migrant workers have already left, but I suppose eventually may come back. The village I live in near the Myanmar border was always quiet but for the last month or 2 it really has been like a ghost town. There was a mass exodus, documented in the media showing huge queues at the land borders near me when many thousands decided to return home when covid hit.

 

Those now living here are mainly the Thai landowners or the older migrants who are on long term stay. The landowners/employers of migrant workers have had a difficult time finding enough people to hire. Good news in the OP but I think not so simple as another extension.
