Mahidol University has been ranked the best university in the country in The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2020 released recently.

In Asia region, Mahidol ranks 122nd among the top 500 universities from 30 Asian countries.

“The ranking was based on several criteria ranging from efficiency in teaching, researching and readiness at regional and international levels,” Professor Dr Banjong Mahaisawiriya, acting president of Mahidol University, said on Thursday (June 4). “They used five key performance indicators [KPIs] as follows: Teaching 25 per cent, research 30 per cent, research citations 30 per cent, international outlook 7.5 per cent and industry income 7.5 per cent.”

Mahidol achieved the country’s top KPI score in teaching and overall category, followed by Mae Fah Luang Unviersity and Chulalongkorn University.

“The results from Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2020 indicated that the university has achieved its strategic goal of becoming the top university in Thailand in terms of teaching and researching capability. We will continue to progress on this path to secure a better ranking among Asian nations in the future,” added Banjong.

So there is 121 better Universities elsewhere in Asia , that says a lot for Thai education doesn't it NOT .

  • I wouldn't be crowing about being ranked only 122 out of 500 universities in 30 Asian countries...that's not even in the top 20%.     Now if in the top 10 - yes, I would be crowing; but 122

and in the world there are 600 Universities that are better than Thailand's top, also from the same Times world rankings, very sad state of Thai academic learning opportunities

That is really nothing to gloat over.

And which Thai University is in the top 10 in the world ?    err hold on   top 1,000 in the world then ?

I would keep very quiet about that if I was him and the fact that they are ripping off their students by providing a low standard of higher education,  just better than the rest of the Thai so called 'Universities'.   My mate's wife 'bought' a BA from one well known Bangkok Uni.  She only ever set foot in that Uni  to register each year and was quite proud of having bought her degree.  Who she paid I have no idea, but I understand that hers is not an isolated case.

You beat me to it.

Place 122? I am not sure I'd want to brag about it too loudly.

With such impressive academic qualifications under her belt, she'll be a prime candidate for a minister's post. Well done!

There is nothing to be proud of and that is a shocking indictment of how bad the education system is here. The best Thailand has to offer is 122 in Asia!

Yes true, but it is showing in their university standings.

The best in Thailand is the 122nd best in Asia? That's just embarrassing...

I guess it put's this press release under a cloud of doubt...

A broken clock is right twice a day, does that make it the best clock in the shop ?

Whilst I am sure that there are probably some educated and smart people here I'll wager they were more than likely educated elsewhere/overseas.

The standard of education I have encountered from people who have "graduated" is awful. I dont think the Thai paperwork is worth much outside of Thailand either.

Just my opinion.

But........but........they did bend over for the Japanese, on the condition that kentucky was used, without the entuck ! I have encountered many university educated Thais who, on being confronted with a world map, could not locate America, Europe, or even Thailand ! What do they get taught at school here !

Obedience, submission, respect for their 'betters'. And don't ask questions.

[Every question has the potential to embarrass those in authority.]

hahaha, the best is nr 121 in asia.... nr 600 in the world or something ?

Team Thailand does it again.

Mahidol seems like a springboard for Thai docs to get their master's and then head to US for a Ph.D. I suppose that works.

So it looks like Thailand has embraced the Participation Trophy mentality. We are all winners, nobody's feelings are hurt, mediocrity all around!

The #122 ranked school in the US would be considered a good but second tier school. And in Thailand it's the best, go figure.

Excellent! and ... about time :clap2:

The new motto in Thailand:

To be number 121?

Yes, there IS 121 better universities in Asia.  If you had gone to even a <deleted> university, you might have noted that Universities is pleural  so the verb must be ARE.  The second phrase of your sentence contains a double negative so ends up being meaningless. Wear was u teached English ?

Mahidol and  Mae Fah Luang University are in the top 800; Chula is in the top 1000;  all other Thai universities are below 1000

I just see 1,000's of international students fighting to get accepted there, IMO will make a killing with all this new students visas

yes, because they gave up to the Japs without a fight. Not quite so nobel when you remind them of that.  Never colonised (not true by the way, Burma did for them centuries ago) , just collaborators.
