The purpose of the handout is to stimulate the economy and keep travel-related businesses afloat. So, it's not a cash handout to deserving Thais like the recent one. The money gets to the hotels and such if there is travel activity regardless of who shows up to use the vouchers. The vouchers could all be given to slow lorises and soi dogs if they could show up and spend them...wouldn't matter. If they get spent, they help the economy (assuming the underlying economic mechanism is working the way the government is saying). So, I'm going to come down on the side of those saying only giving it to Thai people is somewhat arbitrary. Limiting it in any way just limits who will use the vouchers thus limiting the effectiveness of the program.

Exactly that.

Assuming that most of you have Thai girlfriends or wives you might as well let them invite you for a holiday in Thailand.

That's my plan if I decide there's somewhere I want to visit right now. The new rules for the beaches make Phuket sound pretty <deleted>-ing enticing.

I don't see anything wrong with this at all. Of course, there is really nothing free and someone will have to ultimately pay the bill. It's a start. Tourism, you may all recall was tanking badly well before the little beast appeared in our midst.

Please explain that. What is racist? Do you believe you are entitled to gifts from the Thai government just for choosing to visit or stay in the country?

Matzzon,

I am from the USA.  They use that term racist all the time when those not just entering the USA legally but those illegally and they decry them not getting government stimulus aid.  After all, it is "racist" to want something for your own citizens and deny taxpayer money to fund schooling, housing, clothing, food, and of course government stimulus.  It is obvious you havew not been INDOCTRINATED and need to enroll Left Wing Socialist Ideology Training.

Calm down folks, it will be like the 5,000 Baht COVID-19 relief monthly payments scheme.

They rejected most of the millions that applied for it.

I recall only about 9,000,000 people were factored into the government's original relief package numbers.

So far, 28.8 million people have already applied for the 5,000 baht/month cash subsidies, under the “Rao Mai Thing Kan” (We Do Not Leave You Behind) scheme.

But only 13.4 million have passed the qualification screening, leaving thousands queuing in lengthy lines as they wait to file complaints.

Of those eligible, 11 million have had the subsidy wired into their bank accounts already, with the remaining 2.4 million to receive their first payment next week, according to Mr. Lawan Saengsanit, spokesman for the Finance Ministry. (Ref ThailandBusiness News ThailandBusinessNews )

Note the promotional strategy behind it “Rao Mai Thing Kan” (We Do Not Leave You Behind 5555555555555

Come on folks, most of you have been here long enough to know that these are not all inclusive programs that the government comes up with; they are just feel good show pieces ……..

Relax chill out and take a cool drink…………….

Do Farangs grant subsidiaries to Thai tourists in the West? No.

So why should Thailand pamper Farangs?

I’m not a tourist. I reside here.

Americans married to immigrants without social security numbers were denied the recent covid $2400 government stimulus check.  So, not only was the tax paying immigrant excluded, so was the American tax paying spouse if they filed their taxes jointly.

Then that’s a racist police also.

Surely you’re not implying there’s racism in America?

Yes, of course there is.  However, this American policy, although unfair in my opinion, is not racist.  It's not directed at a specific race--that would be racist.  It's directed at immigrants, and immigrants can be and are any race.  The same with Thailand's policy--it's not racist, either.  Foreigners are apparently excluded and, of course, foreigners can be any race, as well.

How about a 3000 baht food card.  Or a 200 baht diaper card.  No one wants to go and sit on the beach at a time like this.  For most people their whole career has been turned to ashes in front of their eyes.

Because nobody is dead and its about a tourism stunt?

What about all the mistreated Cambodians, Laotions and people from Myanmar which are regularly mistreated in their thousands? Food for thought: https://www.hrw.org/report/2018/01/23/hidden-chains/rights-abuses-and-forced-labor-thailands-fishing-industry

No they die because of lack of care from the government. That is manslaughter.

So sue them.

The headlines say 'possible' cashback that 'may' be paid but maybe they'll decide that some turnip-head farang will decide to kick off and they wont do it therefore thanks for depriving the hardworking Thais of a much needed holiday.

I do. Looking forward to going to the Islands, especially if we get a 3000 discount by booking via my wife

Not really about getting wound up for this policy. The point is that Thailand knows very well there are many foreigners living in Thailand, so this policy is basically saying "you have your own money". It's how Thai authorities see foreigners that's the problem. Why can't they just say it's to promote domestic tourism and offer it to all? What is the reason that they are limiting it to Thais only? If you can answer that reasonably then ok, if not it is an issue and you shouldn't ignore the message it portrays.

Exactly! Now why didn’t everyone who posted get that obvious logic?

No, it's not.  It's anti-immigrant.  Immigrant isn't a 'race'.

I don't think that this policy can be viewed as racist, however racism doesn't have to be specifically targeted at one race to be a racist policy. I have had the unfortunate experience of talking to someone who is racist and I can remember that he generally had a hatred for anyone who wasn't white, simple as that, he hated everyone who was not white and born in the UK. He even had a hatred for black people who were born in the UK, first second or third generation did't matter to him, to him they weren't English and that was that! So according to your definition he was not racist?

The Thai government should not limit the policy, simple as that. There is absolutely no reason to limit it except the reason that they are viewing foreigners as different...

Yes, I got your sarcasm.   I was using my original post and your reply to comment on all the posts that have been calling Thailand's voucher scheme 'racist' because it is directed at Thai citizens.   Both the American example I gave and Thailand's vouchers discriminate against non-citizens but that doesn't mean they are racist; neither single out a specific race of non-citizens to exclude from their checks and vouchers.  I think many are too quick to call something racist when sometimes it is actually a different form of discrimination.
