Domestic tourism stimulus: 3,000 baht gift card and possible "cashback" for Thais may start in July

Thai Rath reported that a post Covid-19 stimulus scheme to boost domestic tourism was coming in July.

They quoted Lawaron Saengsanit of the Fiscal Policy Office as saying that the treasury and the ministry for tourism and sports were in broad agreement about the scheme designed to boost the tourism sector between July and October before the start of the main tourist high season.

The scheme is likely to take the form of a 3,000 baht gift card that can be used at places like hotels and restaurants.

Tourism establishments will be encouraged to offer promotions as part of the package.

The suggestions originally came from the tourism ministry.

The treasury also wants to see a "cashback" scheme where Thai domestic tourists who pay more than 3,000 baht for their trips are eligible to get between 10% and 20% back on their expenditure.

Yeah, terrible racist policy, a government using its own financial resources, either from taxes or loans, to support their nationals and rebuild the economy! Dastardly indeed!

Oh dear. Why do you not wait for the details rather than getting all wound up over basically 300 - 600 baht cashback and a gift card that will probably at best have limited participating hotels.

  • Please explain that. What is racist? Do you believe you are entitled to gifts from the Thai government just for choosing to visit or stay in the country? Is the next thing you´re going to say, that

Is the next thing you´re going to say, that it´s racist that they do not include you in their pension system? (Not that it is anything to feel joy about)

Are you going to say it´s racist that you do not get the 5 000 baht handout for 3 month?

Again mirroring China who have been doing this for some weeks.

And foreigners who have a problem maybe #oldfarangsmatter could be  a rallying call. ????

So we - the wretched foreigners who legally reside in this country - are excluded once again?

It's not so much that we desperately need those cashbacks or a 3,000-baht gift card. But it is the principle of things. If foreigners are "allowed" to pay taxes to the Thai state, they also should benefit from this kind of promotional schemes... that are in fact co-financed through their taxes.

Anything else is blatant RACISM. Where are those "Thai activists" that just yesterday staged an "anti-racism" protest against an unfortunate incident that occurred in a country 14 flight hours away? Why don't these "Thai activists" rather stage protests against the racism that is a daily occurrence in their own country?

Because nobody is dead and its about a tourism stunt?

What does a Thai person have to do to get this 3000 baht handout?

A common definition of racist is as follows: showing or feeling discrimination or prejudice against people of other races

Yes, I do believe I'm entitled as I've been paying income tax here for 28 years.

No, I won't say it's racist not to include me in their pension system as I am included in their pension system.

No, it's not racist that I'm not in the handout system as I have not been laid off.

It's the principle, not the money.

Can you tell us why this is racist? Isn't it normal as the government is doing this to encourage INTERNAL(DOMESTIC) tourism?

Thats irrelevant................sound familiar

Ergo, you get paid a lot.

You can look at my post (#13) for an answer. You mention internal/domestic tourism. I'm curious as to why I'm not included in this as I've lived here for 28 years, paid taxes the entire time I've worked, and often travel domestically with my wife which promotes the local tourism market. However, I'm white and not included in this latest offer, so that's a racist policy.

Wiggy lives in LOS, pays taxes etc....

Probably ineffective as most Thais will not have any money for leisure trips.  They would be better off giving a straight 500 baht restaurant coupon or hotel voucher.

If Mrs.Wiggy is Thai I would guess she can apply for it....

I take it you have Permanent Residence status?

I do not, just here on temp extension of stay for the last 16 years.

I do however still pay tax in my home country and get zero benefit from that.

If we were travelling together, possibly. Although that hasn't counted for much when I've been faced with double pricing (another racist policy).

Although you are correct to a certain extent, I do find it disappointing that the approx 200,000THB per year I pay in income tax here doesn't allow me any benefits at all in schemes like this.

or just another possibly, maybe, could be load of boring predictions instead of actual news..  .hey ho...

For anyone who doubts this policy is racist, just for a moment think what would happen if the government in your country tried to exclude tax paying immigrants from partaking in similar government-funded schemes?

As long as one pays tax one should be entitled to this.. period....

You do know that this is Thailand, right?

you are not a Thai National, nor a permanent resident holder, why on earth would the Thai government give you money?

it is not racist anyway, it’s simply a matter of qualifying criteria and you are not the entitled, privileged person that you think you should be. I get regular cash rebates from the Singapore government, even though I don’t live there. It’s because I am Singaporean. You are not, so you don’t get it, nor do any Thai nationals.
