Admit it, you fancied Cupid Stunt, didn't you 555?

Yes, but only in the best possible taste.

And then they will all be black and white. I'm sure that would be offensive to somebody. Perhaps they should all be in 50 Shades of Grey ?

Or 50 shades of gay?

Set during and after the American Civil War, Gone with the Wind has long been attacked for its depiction of slavery.

Wonder what part of slavery they got wrong? Will 'Roots' also be shelved?  Where does it stop?

The black man was always a part of my team, the A-TEAM.

Although, never called him black man but the mohawk man, ' I have his phone number and will call him to beat the living out of you ' was what I said when preteens like me tried to show off, which they believed.

Used the stereotype pretty well :whistling:

This is ridiculous! The whole political correctness thing in the US is completely getting out of hand!

Are you an HBOmax subcriber? If so, maybe consider canceling your subscription in protest?

For the record, HBOmax will simply be re-contextualizing GWTW as TCM has been doing with GWTW and other period films since 1979. AFAIK, it will be re-introduced in the near future. In the meantime, I imagine you could download it legally from any number of pay sites.

I remember seeing it as a child in the 60's and though it was a bit cringe-worthy even then.

It would have been nice if Hattie McDaniel had been treated with respect at the Oscars?

She and her escort were required to sit at a segregated table for two at the far wall of the room; her white agent, William Meiklejohn, sat at the same table. The hotel had a strict no-blacks policy, but allowed McDaniel in as a favor.[34][35] The discrimination continued after the award ceremony as well as her white costars went to a "no-blacks" club, where McDaniel was also denied entry. Another black woman did not win an Oscar again for 50 years, with Whoopi Goldberg winning Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ghost.[36] Weeks prior to McDaniel winning her Oscar, there was even more controversy. David Selznick, the producer of Gone With the Wind, omitted the faces of all the black actors on the posters advertising the movie in the South. None of the black cast members, including Hattie McDaniel, were even allowed to attend the premiere for the movie

BBC Iplayer has removed the German episode from Fawlty Towers, so have Netflix and Britbox.

Now they mess with John Clesse? As a German, I loved Fawlty Towers. Baffling.

I agree, that crosses the line

The point of Fawlty Towers was that it was satire and skewered the British preponderance for harking back to WW11, maybe the slapping of Manuel all the time was a bit much though.

Similarly the brilliant comedy Allo' Allo' skewered all of the characters, German, French and British - and was in itself a satire on an earlier program.

So keep the satire

Not all humour is satire though, and the racial epithets strewn around in "love thy neighbour" just for comic effect now sound cringeworthy

And it is true that Gone with the Wind glorified the myth of southern hospitality and the happy black plantation workers - in itself fake news and revisionism - so I am not sorry to see these go.

I am all for understanding history, satirising the inequities that arose, but not for glorifying them with statues and monuments

The standard should not be "does it satirise, is it racist, is it offensive"....the standard should be "Is it funny?" And Fawlty Towers was, at the time, one of the funniest things on TV. It was just very good. Same with "Allo Allo". I'm German, but I can appreciate both because they were very good comedies in their day. Yes, of course they aged somewhat now.

But to take down something like "Gone with the Wind", by many considered the best film ever made, and by most one of the best films ever made, is frankly akin to the cultural destruction of the Taleban.

Films and comedy are entertainment. Entertainment should not have to conform to narrow moralism. Art has to be free.

Much better than tearing down monuments would have been to build monuments to famous Black and Asian people in history.

Much better than taking down an episode of Fawlty Towers would have been to produce a documentary of the suffering of the German civilian population in WWII. When did you last see that on BBC?

But of course destruction and censorship are so much easier.
