Hong Kong will share the technological innovations it used to keep Covid-19 at bay with Thailand in a series of webinars this month. The territory has been successful in containing Covid-19, with only about 1,100 cases to date and four deaths among a population of some 7.5 million.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will host a webinar at 2pm-3.30pm on June 30 to share tech solutions to prevent, detect and monitor Covid-19 with Thai businesses, in a bid to help kick-start Thailand’s economy after lockdown.

“The world is working hard to contain the outbreak and looking for innovative technologies and solutions to deal with current and future challenges,” said HKTDC chairman Peter KN Lam.

Technologies developed in Hong Kong range from self-cleaning doorknobs, an anti-bacterial coating, delivery robots, and virus-filtering for ventilation systems, to mobile fever detecting robots and dashboards to monitor infection.

HKTDC Chairman Dr Peter K N Lam said the Council is launching a business promotion comprising G2G and B2B promotional events and business-matching activities to create business opportunities for Hong Kong technology enterprises.

HKTDC has designated June as “Thailand month” with a series of online events. A highlight is the webinar co-organised by the Thai Board of Investment and Hong Kong’s Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, featuring Kobsak Pootrakool, deputy secretary-general to the Prime Minister, HKTDC’s Lam and Hong Kong’s Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Edward Yau. The webinar will be held from 4pm-5.30 pm on June 29.

Apart from health tech, medical tech and Covid-19 related areas, the HKTDC’s “Thailand month” will also cover practical solutions in times of social distancing and remote working, including online education, e-commerce, e-business and smart-city technologies that help with business continuity.

I don'understand what HK has to offer Thailand.

Thailand with population of around 66 million vs HK of 7.5 million had a total 3,000+ cases vs 1,000.

Proportionally Thailand did better.

This is a tad worrying. I am sure that there will be apps for tracking and so on. HK is Chinese. Chinese technical solutions are amongst the best in the world at tracking, harvesting and hacking. Some elements here are already trying to harvest personal data.

"Just because I am paranoid does not mean that I am wrong".

You are not paranoid. We're obviously all being prepped for a "new normal" of Chinese-style total surveillance and control.

But we don't have to go along with enslavement by technology. It's our choice. All we have to do is throw away our smartphones.

Now, how easy was that?

I hope it will be as easy as you think. If Thailand truly follows the Chinese model, they will implement social scoring. So you must play to have a “social credit” score that many “privileges“ are based upon. Like having a driver’s license or going to the hospital of your choice, the use of public transportation. Pretty much weaving into every level of your life. China uses other technologies besides smartphones as well.

A glimpse to the future on how China annexes it's vassals.

They should name it "compliance score" instead. +50 points for reciting Mao's red book by heart. Nothing new.

As far as I know, nobody is obliged to own or use a smartphone or even use one they already possess. Jettisoning these addictive little gadgets may not be easy, but it may well be our only hope of preserving our present way of life.

No matter much surveillance there may be from other sources - street cameras, drones or satellites -  no social credit score system could possibly work without the ubiquitous smartphone.

Just consider how poorly the COVID track-and-trace system in my own homeland, the UK, is performing, simply because a substantial percentage of the population either doesn't own a smartphone and not everyone who does is willing to download the tracking app.

Governments realise that to try and force everyone to buy a smartphone would be political suicide. Hence the ploy, used here and elsewhere, of pressuring the commercial sector to insist on digital apps for shopping, banking and other essential purposes.

Once the pandemic is over, we must demand the full restoration of our civil rights - not least the right NOT to own a smartphone or be forced to use any other digital tracking device.
