Exclusive: Amid Brexit impasse, Germany urges no-deal preparations - document

BERLIN (Reuters) - The German government is urging other EU states to prepare for a no deal Brexit, according an internal document that casts doubt on Britain’s optimism over chances of an early agreement on its future ties with the bloc.

Britain left the European Union on Jan. 31 and their relationship is governed by a transition arrangement that keeps previous rules in place while new terms are negotiated.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who confirmed last week that Britain has no intention of extending that transition beyond 2020, wants to strike a free trade deal quickly.

On Monday, he suggested an agreement could be reached in July with “a bit of oomph”. But the German government document, dated June 15 and seen by Reuters, shows Berlin expects the negotiations to take longer.

“From September, the negotiations enter a hot phase,” it read. “Britain is already escalating threats in Brussels, wants to settle as much as possible in the shortest possible time and hopes to achieve last-minute success in the negotiations.”

The German Foreign Office was convinced the transition deal would not be extended beyond the end of this year, the government document showed.

“It is therefore important to preserve the unity of the 27, to continue to insist on parallel progress in all areas (overall package) and to make it clear that there will be no agreement at any price,” the document read.

“Therefore, both national and European contingency planning would now have to start in order to be prepared for a no deal 2.0.”

The withdrawal agreement on Britain’s departure was only struck after bitter negotiations that threatened to end in a no deal Brexit, but Berlin did not believe the situation was as critical this time around.

“The situation is less serious than in 2019, as important regulations, for example for citizens, were sorted out in the withdrawal agreement,” the document read.

With the two sides so far apart and little time left to negotiate, there are concerns that London’s decision not to extend the transition might lead to a cliff edge that could compound the economic damage caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Good. Even if there was more time for talks, reaching an agreement would still be impossible because both parties’ positions simply are incompatible. You can’t square a circle. It’s time to accept that and to move on. There’s more important things than this. Let’s not waste more resources on this nonsense.

Brexiteers and their economic illiteracy have provided us some good laughs over the last couple of years, such as getting obsessed with something that’s worth less than 0.1% of the pie. “to have your crumbs and eat it” it is. Let us have the big fishes then. ????

Boris and all the others promised the impossible. At least some of them were smart enough to know that even when they promised it. Who will the UK deal with if not with the EU? The USA? China? All the big players will treat the UK like the little player they are. If the UK politicians think the EU is unreasonable don't be surprised what the other will offer and demand.

Take back your control. Sure. What a joke!

You mean I repeat: "Brexit is stupid and you should have known it" too often?

It seems I am many others didn't repeat that often enough. There are still people out there who think Brexit was a good idea. It would be funny if it wouldn't be so sad.

Sad for you maybe but a rare event of happiness and joy for the majority of the British people.

I expect the shambles of the Tory government headed by a puppet PM to bungle any Brexit deal in similar incompetence as mismanaging the Corona virus.  Waste of space, IMO.

And waste of my time even considering further comment on this subject until the marvelous chlorine chicken deal with the USA comes to fruition.

Fact is that Unilever, a company 50% British, 50% dutch,  surely not one of the smallest, initially intended to stay in the Netherlands, has decided now to stay 100% in England.

Brexiteers wanted out from Europe totally, Looks like what we're getting, As for fishing, its only right that they should trade for it. With Britain in control of its stocks.

WE won't be eating chicken, its going to be tasty Beef and Lamb from Aus and Kiwi again, which many anti brexit fans can not even remember before 1973.

Why  not just give them two  fingers, am sick of hearing of this  krap,  dragging it  on and on and on, right up there with CV19 and the new BLM. New  Normal, total  ballcocks the lot  of  it.

Chlorinated chicken is like a wilting warcry to some of the the remainers, they can't imagine for one minute that they have a freedom of choice and don't have to buy it or even eat it.

I wouldn't touch any USA imported processed food or drinks of any kind. It's all junk, leads to obesity and diabetes 2 and, for your information, it's got zero to do with 'remainers' in my case, it's all about keeping healthy.

5555 and who can afford to buy the expensive chicken from EU?

Wait, does this mean that on top of the bendy bananas, the EU also made “tasty beef and lamb from Aus and Kiwi” illegal? Scandalous! I’m outraged!
