The minimum amount for expressway Easy Pass top-up and registration fee for new users has been reduced from Bt500 to Bt300 from June 16.

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) said this week that the move aims to promote the use of Easy Pass and reduce traffic congestion in front of toll booths, especially now that the lockdown has been lifted nationwide and more people are travelling using expressways.

New users can register for Easy Pass service at any expressway toll booth office, which is open daily from 5am to 10pm. Or, they can register at Exat head office on Phaholyothin Road and Easy Pass Fast Service booths, which opens during weekdays from 8.30am to 3.30pm.

Online registration is also available via True Money Wallet mobile application. The Easy Pass card will be mailed in 3-5 working days (delivery fee applies).

Users can top up their cards starting at Bt300 through the Easy Pass Fast Service, bank’s online services and convenience stores. The available mobile applications include K Plus, Krung Thai Next, Krungsri Mobile App, or True Money Wallet.

I am trying to work out why I have never seen an issue with cars getting stuck at easy pass, but M pass on the motorway i see cars having issues all the time. Instead of just opening the barrier and letting them through, they insist on backing you up into fast approaching traffic, very dangerous.

These tag reading systems are an excellent example how screwed this country's bureaucracy is.

Years ago there were two systems, M Pass and Easy Pass, one for Bangkok and one for the rest of tollway gates around Bangkok and the new tollways (i.e. Cholburi, Pattaya etc.).

I had to have two tags for each of my two cars. The registration process is in line with a potential application of Thai citizenship. In my (alien) case it required a complete set of copies of my passport and the one-year visa, a copy of the work permit, a certification by the immigration of residence and a complete copy of the car registration book (which is in my name). I have two cars, so four sets in all. Duly signed with a blue pen, no other colour allowed (like Bangkok Bank!).

Lateron only, after one of this tags had insufficient funds, I used (illegally, I know, and I should do time in the slammer for it) the tag of the other car which I happened to have with me too and - wonders never seize - it worked and I did not get immediately arrested.

One day, some smart officer somewhere in the orbit of planet "Paperwork" must have realized that one system would suffice and hence both systems work everywhere.

I meanwhile "emptied" three out of four tags, have the remaining tag sufficiently charged and with my car keys. I wanted to return the three tags I no longer needed; their answer was to sign a (Thai) form and again the full regalia of dozens of photocopies. I just dumped them on the way out in the bin, in which I saw some other tags as well.

Go figure - explains how this bureaucratic maze has gone absof"*ç%"ç%tely ballistic, oh well ..........
