ED visa for studying Muay Thai

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

My wife and I are looking to study Muay Thai and have a few questions regarding the ED visa and what the requirements are when you want to study this martial art.

  1. How many sessions per week are required?
  2. Can we study multiple years should we enjoy it?
  3. Can we bring a dependent child?

The most important thing is that you pick a gym that is registered with the Ministry of Education. If not registered you will not be able to get a visa or extension of stay.

1. Not sure about that but the gym/school should know what is required.

2. You can only study until you reach certain set level of competency.

3. You child can get a non-o visa form a embassy or consulate and a extension of stay for being a member of your family after either one you get an extension of stay for attending school.

Thanks for the information. Are there places for beginners or do we need to have some previous experience? By set level of competency, could we aim high and study for several years? Is there any information available online? Is there a list of MoE registered gyms? We're looking to stay in Bangkok.

Thank you for taking your time.

There is no experience needed.

But from experience i would warn you about this construction, especially if you have limited experience in the sport and training in Thailand. You will need to sign up at a gym for a longer period of time meaning yiu are stuck there... if the gym isnt the best, you dont like the sport, or hate someone there its hard to switch gyms. And some gyms pay much more attention to people staying for a shorter time or people who want to fight. Once you paid for 6 months they have little incentive to give you the best.

Why not study thai language and train at the same time? You might want to learn the language anyways once here and can still switch gyms when you dont like it somewhere. Even with experience in the sport its a hard life to train daily in Thai heat with sessions of 2-3 hours (twice a day).

Edit: i've come across several several foreigners at different gyms staying there long time. They differed widely in skill level (beginner to pro) but they all fought here also to give structure to their training. Dont know what types of visas some were on, the higher level guys trained for free and got visas through the gym (the gym takes a cut from the prize money).
