Sent packing: 14 year stay in Thailand is up for German pensioner on 2,241 day overstay

Pathum Thani immigration and the tourist police went to a housing estate in the Lamlukka area where they found a German retiree on overstay.

Naew Na pictured Gunther Z., 61, showing his passport with a suitcase outside his house.

He has been in Thailand for 14 years but last renewed his retirement visa in 2014.

He was thus on overstay of 2,241 days.

In such a case he would likely be deported and banned for ten years, notes Thaivisa.

In the media's standard stock phrases they said this was all part of immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang's plans to rid the kingdom of illegal foreign law breakers and inspire confidence among the public.

They urged the public to continue to call 1178 to report infractions.

What I'd like to know is, who ratted him out?

I wonder what would happen if they granted farangs visas to stay, you know like permanent resident visas, OMG, what would all the immigration and police have to do then, no more chasing down hardline criminals comes to my mind, that and all the BS paperwork that goes with it......hmmm, some might be out of a job x 1,000 at least ????

Yep, as others have said, Thailand is safe again, and somehow I wish other countries who grant permanent residency to Thai's thought about providing the same level of transparency that the Thai's provide to us farangs living here, on extensions, but guess their too smart for that, too much paperwork and continues checking, life being more relaxed and important that the Thai way of things Vs other countries, I would guess, done once and dusted.

How many are left? Does anyone know a number of people who are still hiding here?

Probably because it's such a bloody hassle if you don't have a lot of money.

Ever since easy visa runs and back-to-back visas have become difficult it's not hard to see why people living under the radar have increased dramatically.

Those who were on the lower rungs of the ladder just barely getting by are now faced with the stark choice of going back to Farangland or becoming illegals.

I guess he was like believing it was visa amnesty much earlier than it became.

Maybe his money tree died and the princess dobbed him in to make way for a new money tree?

Very easy for them to do a data search in the system. Find those that have expired and see if they have left the country by the IO data base as well.  If not checked out, literally and figuratively, a check of the last registered residence would uncover whether they were here on overstay or had expired.....How simple, and then they could stop with these stories and how safe it is making Thailand....

Seriously? They are busting more and more dangerous Chinese setting up illegal shop here than anything else.

The immigration must have this number. If they never left the country they are either dead and not discovered yet or on overstay ... or simply an error of the immigration.

Quite why foreigners take part in these 'parade' photo sessions is beyond me - he had nothing to lose by telling the to p%* off!

Whilst I don't agree with the media circus, I would think most of us would applaud the police catching illegals in our own country and sending them back from where they came.

This guy, whatever his reasons tried to cheat the system and got caught. What did he think would happen ?

Why?  What difference does it make, do you want to support him and other illegals like him?

You lost the average IO's attention after sentence two.

The IB did not say that this time, it was the daft media that said it.

Can you explain just how you or anyone else is supporting him if he stayed here?  He was obviously just going on about his business, just never took the time to obtain his extensions for the past 5 plus years.

I believe he meant offered them to all.....not the hoop jumping that has to be done to obtain PR and only 100 a year if that.

It has just occurred to me that there may be more of such "catches".

Bearing in mind that under the said terms of the amnesty for foreign presence that Immigration would be "automatically" updating/validating  etc. things such as  90 day, TM 30, and in whatever way making temporary extensions to all eligible visa's.

With the absence of the usual people coming through Immigration Office doors it would have allowed time and staff to work through  all existing files of foreigners to do that. As part of it it  is it not possible that due to the integration of the system that some files come up as a void/ invalid presence?

So maybe the "snitch" was the system  rather than a person?

The general consensus on TVF seems to be to kick all foreigners out of their home Country , but retired felangs should be allowed to stay in Thailand visa free for as long as they like

It's better to be thought of an idiot than to open your mouth and confirm it!

You have no idea.
