Pubs, restaurants and hotels to reopen as England eases social distancing

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Tuesday pubs, restaurants and hotels could reopen in England early next month when the social distancing rule is relaxed to one metre providing "mitigations" were in place.

 

Britain's economy has been hammered by the lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19 and although non-essential retailers were allowed to reopen last week, many businesses, particularly in the hospitality and leisure sectors, have remained closed.

 

By relaxing the rule on social distancing from two metres to one metre as long as they took mitigation such as wearing of masks and the use of protective screens, Johnson said many businesses could reopen from July 4.

 

"Given the significant fall in the prevalence of the virus we can change the two-metre social distancing rule from the 4th of July," Johnson told parliament.

 

The changes will allow two households to meet in any setting, hairdressers can reopen along with places of worship, most leisure facilities and tourist attractions such as theme parks. However, nightclubs, indoor gyms and swimming pools will stay closed.

 

He said not all restrictions could be lifted at once and people would need to remain vigilant and use common sense.

 

Britain has one of the highest death tolls in the world from COVID-19, but the number of cases has been steadily falling in recent weeks. Health officials on Monday reported 15 new deaths, the lowest rise since mid-March.

 

The daily tally of deaths peaked in April, when the toll exceeded 1,000 on nine days.

So Britain finally realizes it is time to wake up. Surprised there are no posts saying the cases of co vid are going to spike. Can somebody please come in this thread and predict everybody is going to die?

Not everybody. Only Brits and other people living there. Not everyone can have the luck and live in Thailand ????

Don't worry the ill effects of the virus haven't even started for Thailand yet. Give it a year when the food riots start.

Typical dishonest post. No one says everybody is going to die from Covid. On the other hand, just a few months ago, the British govt bet on almost nobody dying from Covid. How did that work out? And as for the consequences of this opening, there are people called epidemiologists who, as we are now learning from the example of the USA, should be listened to when they warn of consequent spikes in infections and hospitalizations. But by all means keep those hands of yours pinned to your ears.

And why do you think that the ill effects haven't started yet? Do you think possibly it might have to do with how virtually 100 percent of Thais manage to wear masks in public? A percentage that Americans seem unable to approach at all closely? And why do you think that the advent of a serious Covid pandemic in Thailand is approaching? You really have to start consulting the words people who actually know something about this disease.

I don't think a major epidemic is about to come to Thailand and I have my reasons for that.

Because Thailand has already had a few outbreaks of Covid particularly in the South and dealt with them very effectively via social distancing and mask wearing. As more and more research comes in, it turns out that mask wearing seems to be hugely important in subduing covid. The Thais have no problem with this.

There is no gaurantee of no further outbreaks in Thailand, this is far from done virus wise or economically.

It will be crazy on the first weekend of the pubs opening, limited availablity of tables, no standing in pubs, drunks, fights etc and spikes in cases which will lead to local lockdowns.

I agree that with the advent of tourism it could definitely make a dent. But if Thais continue to wear masks and avoid physical contact, they'll do much better than countries that don't.

Because the ill effects I am talking about are economic. You need to learn to read between the lines...

Nothing dishonest about it. Awhile ago the media was saying how everybody would die if we didn't cower inside. Both of your replies to my posts have been rather presumptuous on every level.

Spoons have the size and scale to operate under the restrictions, and Brits are desperate to go for a beer. All will be forgiven. The people won't boycott them - well apart from some of those who are still angry about Brexit.

So in order to discredit predictions about the dangers of relaxing standards too soon,  you falsely claim that media reports claimed that everyone will die from covid-19.

On the other hand, you make hyperbolic claims about the consequences of continued vigilance including food riots.

Not much room for facts or nuance in your view of things.

I sincerely hope not. Scotland is currently averaging around 3.5 Covid deaths per day against England's 130.

I fear that you are right, but hopefully sufficient people will remember Tim Martin's odious actions of just few months ago, and take their business elsewhere. 

 

The companies people are vowing to boycott after the coronavirus pandemic is over

 

"Calls to boycott Wetherspoons came after millionaire boss Tim Martin told staff they would not be paid after this Friday and suggested they get jobs at Tesco. He also told chain suppliers they would not be paid what they are owed until the massive pub estate is allowed to re-open when the coronavirus lockdown ends."

Sturgeon will try and reword whatever Boris says to make it sound different, but it will basically be the same. A lot like trying to copy your more intelligent friend's homework without the teacher noticing ????.
