Thailand eyes opening borders to those from Australia, NZ, Japan, Taiwan and some Chinese cities

Thailand’s National Communicable Diseases Committee has approved a proposed relaxation of travel restrictions, to allow certain foreigners, from countries deemed as low risk, such as New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Taiwan and some Chinese cities, to enter Thailand.

Thailand’s Public Health Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, who chaired the meeting today (Wednesday) said that, in the initial stage, Thailand will pair with countries considered low risk, under a travel bubble tourism arrangement, which will be reassessed periodically.

The first to be allowed into Thailand again are members of the diplomatic corps, foreigners who need to visit Thailand for economic and social reasons, such as businessmen, investors and expatriates with residences in Thailand.

So, does that mean your country could be banned again and you stuck in Thailand again ? I sure hope they inform tourists of that little bit of info before booking flights or coming

No tourist* was or will be stuck in Thailand.

The bans are for entering Thailand only.

* or a few very specific cases maybe ?

Or they use the place of issue from your passport.

Irrespective of where you actually might live.

True, but the article doesn’t tell if you qualify by nationality or residence. But by residence makes more sense.

I was really thinking of Chinese nationals living in China who could have a passport issued, say, where they were born, but are working somewhere there's currently a Covid outbreak - like Beijing at the moment.

Right now in Victoria there is a serious second wave of infections with panic buying started all over again what with not wearing masks and not keeping social distancing, strange when you think that people flaunt the common sense safeguard instructions but runs like a bat out of hell to stock up on toilet paper...

The Japanese use the place of issue as differentiator.

Denial of permission to entry

(2) Foreigners who have Chinese passports issued in Hubei Province or Zhejiang Province of China

That presumes the Chinese government itself has not barred you from leaving the (Thai) non-permitted high COVID risk city.

I thought Australians were barred from leaving the country and New Zealand too.

I'm already planning a couple of trips to Spain and Germany this summer, no chance of getting back to Thailand before Q4.

I would think Thailand would use the same or similar method.

I think so too. By residence makes more sense, but is not feasible.

Imagine you have to bring along a residence certificate.

Do you have to translate it first or does the IO have to learn all the languages out there? Let alone if it’s not even written with Roman letters.

By port of embarkation is not feasible either, because too easy to circumvent.

Assuming that only a low single digit percentage of the world population don’t live there where their passports are issued, makes the place of issue quite accurate to be used as differentiator.

? There were thousands of tourists stuck in Thailand when this first kicked off. Flights cancelled, no money and waiting for their government to provide repatriation flights

If they stay below 14 days, no quarantine? After 14 days when it should be clear if they are infected (at least with a test) they have to leave and can't let their money in Thailand anymore?

These ideas get more and more ridiculous every day.

Also that companies which invested a lot of money here are only now allowed to send people to Thailand with quarantine? And now only from Japan?

This government has no idea how to make money.

My current and previous passport states 'issued in Australia' (No city or state) I applied in Bangkok for the current one.

Maybe referring to the fact that some Chinese states are safer than other due to state / local lockdowns.

If you are locked down in a unsafe area you won’t be able to move a safe one that is accepted by Thailand.

Why not? It's not as if China has lied constantly during this whole pandemic.

So people from Laos (19 Wuhan flu cases, no deaths) are still barred from entering Thailand.  Why?

Means only that no granularity can be used to differentiate the states of Australia.

Some Chinese cities?

So Beijing is experiencing problems with Corvid, fly/drive into another city & catch a flight here?

Trusted Thailand !

This is a risk limitation process to contain further outbreaks to a manageable number. It's inevitable the world over that as soon as land, air and sea borders are opened to visitors there will be second infection waves. Until there is an effective vaccine in situ, globally, the virus will continue to infect people. Immunity levels need to reach c.70+% of countries' population before the virus begins to burn out. And then, it's not known how long the immunity would last.

Regretfully, in today's society, as long as humans increasingly domesticate animals and birds for food, there will be viral and bacterial infections passed from these animals and birds to humans. You could bet you and your family's life on it that frequent deadly virus outbreaks will be a foregone conclusion.

While I hate the terminology of 'herd immunity', it's an appropriate demeanor.

1.4 billion Chinese, and thankfully, only a small percentage of them have passports.  The flights will resume, and the white busses will roll before too long...

Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can.

"No tourist was stuck in thailand"??

Tell that to the tourists who had flights cancelled multiple times when this first started.

June 17, 2020

Beijing government called for residents of medium and high-risk areas, as well as those related to the Xinfadi market, to not leave Beijing. Other residents should not leave the city if the trip is not necessary. Those who have to leave should first have negative nucleic acid test results no older than seven days. All exhibitions, sports events, and shows will be stopped and tourist services to other provinces and overseas are suspended. All outbound taxi and car-hailing services were suspended on Tuesday. Other cities across China warned they would quarantine arrivals from the capital. Shandong, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Fujian, and Shanghai have introduced a range of quarantine measures for travelers from Beijing.
