Tests show man's water bottle left on a park bench was 'spiked'

Chemical analysis has confirmed that a runner's water bottle left on a bench in a park near Nonthaburi City Hall was spiked, likely by using a syringe needle.

Weerachai Phutdhawong, a professor at the Department of Chemistry at Kasetsart University, revealed the test results on Friday (June 25).

The professor tested the 60 millilitres of water left in the bottle using a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer and found it contained xylazine (98 per cent) and methyl paraben, etc. Xylazine is an anaesthesia used by veterinarians for animals such as cattle, which veterinarians prefer to use with cats. In 2013, there was a case of the drug being used by criminals to steal property.

Virot Sibaht, the user of Facebook page ‘Etoriw Sibaht’, had revealed his experience in a post.

He said he suffered from blurred vision, shortness of breath and vomiting after drinking water from the bottle before passing out while hanging out with friends.

He had drunk the "spiked" water after exercising in the morning. The water had a strange taste so he did not finish it, he said, adding that on closer scrutiny, he found a small incision, like by a needle, on the bottle. He then explained his experience on Facebook and warned other runners to be careful.

Prof Weerachai said the victim could have been poisoned by the drink but he escaped as he had consumed only one-third of the bottle.

A needle could have inject the drug into the bottle in 10 seconds, he said.

In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration declared xylazine as a controlled drug. Veterinarians who need to use xylazine must ask for permission first and the general public must not be allowed access, the FDA had said. However, violators can get away easily as there is only a fine for possession, he said. He urged police to repeat the testing he had done at the Department of Medical Sciences to confirm the results.

The victim, Virot, said he was relieved to know the test result as many people claimed he had made up the story. He believed that the thief had possibly set his sights on a smartwatch worth around Bt10,000 that he was wearing. Virot added that henceforth he would not place his water bottle on the bench anymore and would avoid running in that park for a while.

I'm naturally a cynical old sod.

So he sat down on a bench next to a man who just so happens to carry xylazine with him, (and a syringe!!), manages to inject into bottle for 10 seconds without guy knowing and said guy then drank a 1/3rd of the bottle.

Errm, well OK then.

nah, it works sorta like this.

bad guy gets his hands on some date-rape drug, loads into a syringe, and heads out to find a convenient victim.

bad guy wanders into a park and spies a jogger getting ready to run.  victim puts his stuff on a bench, stretches a bit, then does a couple laps around a lake.  while runner is out of view, baddie injects drug into water bottle then walks a short distance away.

victim returns from running, drinks water, goes sleepy-time.  bad guy takes stuff and leaves.

Hard to believe someone would go that length for a $300 watch which when second hand, he would be lucky to get $150 for.

not that hard to believe, in some places, they'll shoot you for a couple dollars.

the bad guy doesn't know what you have, just that you have it and he doesn't.  you might think $150 isn't worth the trouble, but it can certainly be sold or traded for drugs or liquor.  it could be worth it to the dude that needs today's fix.

To be fair there is more to this story, but just as dumb. The runner leaves the bottle unattended whilst he exercises, then comes back to it and finds it tastes funny.

I would guess the fact he leaves it unattended is a pattern, he has pi$$ed someone off and this is the end result.

Actually I run and it is quite common for runners to put their bottle down somewhere. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Seems like a lot of aggro. Why not just wear a mask and use a gun !? Not that I'm advocating that mind you.

I run every morning too, to leave drinks unattended and to come back to them later is just dumb, running or not running. Its just common sense at the end of the day.

Agreed, I hate drinking warm water anyway. If you can't drink enough, you're running too far- there are usually plenty of stalls selling water along most routes.

If they guy needed a fix, you would think that he would have drank that bottle of water himself ?

Decathlon sell very inexpensive running belts with water containers,  or if you are training for the 'Marathon des Sables' you can use a hydration back pack ????

the criminal now learned he should put it into a sweet drink as water is too obvious

no aggro at all, barely an inconvenience!

mask & gun can be dangerous, never know when the other guy has a bigger gun, never know when someone might fight back.  penalties for armed robbery are higher, much higher if he shoots a victim.

guy carries a syringe in his pocket in case he comes across a suitable target.  safer and easier if the victim is asleep and helpless.  penalty for this would likely be a wai and 500 baht.

Actually here in CM at the stadium and other places that people run, they are regulars and everyone knows everyone and so is a common thing.

Now if I was say Lumpini park in BKK, i would think twice about that as perhaps there is unwise. I gather it depends on where you are.

You forgot to mention his sharp eyesight which detected a needle size hole in the bottle.

But still dumb in this day & age !

Not actually for places in CM. Everyone knows everyone. Years back at the stadium track I had one local older woman who would pick up empty bottles. One day she picked up my 1/2 full semi cold bottle, emptied it out and put into her recycle bag. When I came around running I stopped and yacked her really hard. She never did that again. But generally everyone know each other here and watch out for everyone.

Instead of poisoning I had my bicycle stolen in a similar scenario in Benjakitti Park. A Thai was watching me while I was locking my bicycle at one of those bike racks that dot Benjakitti. He probably was timing my laps, because it was still there when passing the stand on lap 1 and 2.Third time around it was gone.

Sounds the most reasonable to me. Who leaves a water bottle laying on a bench while they're off running????

Only idiots

I always leave my water bottle on a partially hidden ledge when I run in lumpini. It got nicked once but apart from that nothing bad has happened. I’d do the same if doing laps in the park in London.

Incidents like this story are very rare if it’s even true!
