SRT deploys additional train coaches to accommodate holiday rush

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has attached additional passenger coaches to trains to facilitate travel during the Asalha Bucha and Buddhist Lent days from July 3 to 8 this year.

 

 

SRT governor Nirut Maneepan said that currently SRT operated 224 trains a day for passengers.

 

"We expect the number of passengers using trains to travel during a long holiday to increase a lot because the government has eased lockdown measures," he said. "Therefore, we have added passenger coaches to trains to accommodate the rush."

 

He said that the SRT had instructed staff to strictly inspect trains and train stations and ensure passengers' safety while travelling.

 

"All staff must be tested for alcohol and addictive substances before performing their duties," he said. "Meanwhile, staff must wear face masks, rubber gloves and face shields."

 

He said that to contain the spread of Covid-19, the SRT had implemented measures, such as screening passengers, providing alcohol-based gel and arranging seats to maintain social distancing.

 

"The SRT will sell only 50 per cent of all seats in each train and refrain from selling standing tickets and food in the train, so passengers have to bring their own food for journeys longer than three hours," he said.

 

"Also, passengers have to check-in and check-out via ThaiChana platform."

 

He expected that these measures would help facilitate passengers and ensure their safety while travelling.

They must have dragged some of the old ones out of the sidings where they have been parked for years! The last time I traveled from Chiang Mai to Bangkok they had a couple of old coaches stuck on the front of the normal rake. As a bit of a railway enthusiast ( well a lot of a railway enthusiast really) I had a woder down to have a look. They had wooden seats, and the ride was "exciting". I would think that the bogie springs were worn, and judging by the groaning noises the bearing surfaces for lateral movement on the bogies hadn't been greased for years. Still, we made it to Bangkok...

@herfiehandbag, If you like train stuff, take the airport train from Phaya Thai. About Makkasan station look out on the left side. You will see the SRT sheds with acres and acres of old rolling stock parked up, some of it has been there so long it is completely covered by natural growth.
