Foreign diplomats invited to see coconuts being picked by monkeys

 

 

The Thai Commerce Ministry will invite members of the foreign diplomatic corps to observe the harvesting of coconuts by pigtailed macaque monkeys, in an effort to prove that the process does not involve cruelty to animals, as alleged by animal rights group PETA.

 

Commerce Permanent Secretary Mr. Boonyarith Kalayanamit says that he wants to show that using monkeys to harvest coconuts is a traditional way of life and the practice does not amount to torture.

 

He said he has instructed commercial attachés at Thai embassies abroad to clarify the matter, especially with supermarkets that sell coconut products from Thailand.

At least it gives the monkeys something to keep them busy. Otherwise, they may form gangs and rob tourists! 

They might get promoted to factory jobs, set up unions and finally a government.

Just the headline alone is like a Monty Python sketch!!!!

 

Seriously, I hope the monkeys have work permits!

Come on, stop monkeying about and get this matter sorted.

And apparently all the foreign  diplomats turned up the Thai parliament, thinking this would be the best place to observe this practice...

Would these be the same Diplomats that observed the impartial  Elections?

Maybe, as the monkeys they were observing ran in the elections, so maybe.

They do learn quickly by copying behaviour they see.

Yeh sure ... put on a show while people are visiting and then revert to the old practices when they are gone.

Chaining a wild animal up to do work for you is inhuman. Leaving them out in the rain with no cover adds to it. This is no different than having dogs and chaining them up all day and get mad when they bark at everyone because they're bored and ignored. Granted, this is a third world country many years behind more civilized ones, but since PETA is here they need to be able to take charge. Which foreign diplomats were shown? More Asian ones, where this and animal mistreatment is okay?

I have to say that the response of the UK supermarkets is just pathetic ! ... I watch the monkeys working here in Samui and they seem totally happy and enjoy the game. The farmers treat them very well as they are so valuable once trained. 

I think we should ban eating lamb ... as the farmers use sheepdogs to control the sheep. 

Mankind deserves to die.  

If want animal rights start with halal slaughter ,the most barbaric way to kill an animal ,,oops can’t do that ,can’t offend the muslums even though they want kill us

Yes, they're paid peanuts

I've seen it a long time ago, many times. I did not see any chains or cruelty, or animals left out in the rain. I did think that the largest monkey was trying to aim the coconuts at the boss rather than just letting them fall.
