Speculation grows over major shake up to domestic Air Asia flights in Thailand

A major shake up to domestic flight schedules in Thailand is in the offing after Manager reported that Air Asia were planning to add Suvarnabhumi to their existing flight schedules out of Don Muang.

In addition Hua Hin residents are set to have their own new flights to and from Chiang Mai and Udon Thani starting next month.

Manager quotes a Facebook page "We Love Thailand Airlines" as a basis for their story.

Though there was no official confirmation from Air Asia they said that the airline had asked the authorities at Suvarnabhumi to add flights from Bangkok's main airport to Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai, Krabi and Phuket.

Manager cited promotional advertising from Air Asia as an indication that the new schedules would go ahead.

Thus Air Asia would join Thai Airways, Thai Smile, Bangkok Airways and Vietjet who already operate out of Suvarnabhumi. Air Asia's main Thai hub is Don Muang.

Air Asia customers would now have the choice of either Don Muang or Suvarnabhumi.

As reported earlier this month, Air Asia is also set to start flying to and from Hua Hin to Chiang Mai and Udon Thani in a phased set of new flights starting August 7th and being completed by October 23rd.

The flights will be as follows:

FD 3901 Chiang Mai to Hua Hin leaving the north at 10am and arriving in Hua Hin at 11am.

FD 3910 Hua Hin to Udon Thani 11.30 am to 12.55pm.

FD 3911 Udon Thani to Hua Hin 1.25pm to 2.40 pm.

FD 3900 Hua Hin to Chiang Mai 3.10pm to 4.10pm.

Flying to Suvarnabhumi would be a welcome competition.

ThaiSmile only choice from Khon Kaen.

And currently of course there is endless capacity available.

Suvarnabhumi domestic terminal quite spooky.

Thai Vietjet Air will fly KKC to Suvarnabhumi from next month

Yep, forgot about it.

A bit more life for the expanded KKC airport under construction.

Flying domestically I really don't care if it's Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang. Yeah I'd rather take the Airport Link than the A1 bus in and out of the city, but both are easy enough. And soon Don Mueang will have its own Airport Link. Don Mueang's domestic terminal is fine, it's just the international terminal that's been a complete <deleted> shoot (pre-pandemic anyway).

Does it even make sense to keep both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang open right now?

Yes, the cost of "moth-balling" one against it being open, operating and making some revenue makes perfect sense !

Good news - more competition for Thai Smile, especially for international travelers with onward connections to the World. Khon Kaen was my local airport and with Air Asia's Fly-Thru, immigration formalities were completed in Khon Kaen's International Departure lounge, avoiding immigration at Don Mueang. It will be interesting to see if Air Asia offer the same service for international passengers via Suvarnabhumi - when we are back to "new normal"!!

I will never book with Air Asia ever again.

With the usual BS reply from their service staff ....

Good day to you! Upon checking, your refund case is still under In Progress. Due to the pandemic, our refund process will take up to 12-16 weeks or more to be done. We know that would be frustrating! Our team is working hard to process refunds as quickly as possible, due to the exceptionally high volume of requests we've received though, It's taking longer than usual. Your kind understanding and patience are much appreciated on this

Don't know about the refund (I thought they did not do refunds), but they've credited my AirAsia account ("BIG") for all the money from cancelled flights (their cancellations),  promptly & within couple of weeks (on two occasions)...
