Seattle Black Lives Matter clashes spark 45 arrests, 21 police injured

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Dozens were arrested and many police injured in clashes around Seattle's biggest Black Lives Matter protest in weeks on Saturday, police said, with a renewed energy sparked by violent clashes between activists and federal agents in nearby Portland, Oregon.

 

Police said officers used non-lethal weapons in attempts to disperse the thousands of marchers in the late afternoon after some protesters set fire to the construction site for a King County juvenile detention facility and courthouse.

 

By 10 p.m.(0500 GMT), police had "made 45 arrests in connection with today’s riot in the East Precinct," the Seattle Police wrote in a Twitter post.

It said "21 officers sustained injuries after being struck by bricks, rocks mortars/other explosives. Most officers were able to return to duty. One was treated at a hospital for a knee injury."

 

Earlier the police had said they were working to secure access for the city's fire department to the blaze, which it said was started by about a dozen people who were part of a large group of demonstrators.

 

President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he expanded the deployment of federal police to Seattle, enraging local officials and igniting anger among protesters.

 

Police said a protest turned into a riot in Seattle, Washington, on Saturday, and demonstrators nationwide took to the streets in solidarity with racial justice activists opposed to federal intervention in their cities. This report produced by Zachary Goelman.

 

"We saw what was happening in Portland and we wanted to make sure in our city we were standing in solidarity with other moms," said Lhorna Murray, who attended on behalf of the newly formed Wall of Moms Seattle, replicating a tactic from the Portland protests where mothers, dressed in yellow, form a human wall between protesters and law enforcement.

 

The tactics of federal officers in Portland have drawn the ire of local leaders and Democrats in Congress, who say those officers are using excessive force and complain of overreach by the Trump administration.

 

U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Washington Brian Moran said in a statement on Friday that federal agents are stationed in Seattle to protect federal properties and the work done in those buildings.

 

The Trump administration has also sent federal police to Chicago, Kansas City and Albuquerque, New Mexico, over the objections of those mayors.

I hope all injured police were white. Imagine if the mob attacked a black police-person to prove that black lives matter, that would be ridiculous. Just like all this identity politics and superiority movement nonsense we get rammed down out necks every time we read the news or watch TV. I'm sick of it. 

 Whatever Trump does when he finally cracks down on these violent leftists, it wasn't harsh enough.

Apparently no federal officers were involved in the riot, so just those fine upstanding citizens exercising their, in their opinion, right to destroy property and attack police.

 

So far working well to encourage voters to re elect Trump.

Well donald must be delighted that HIS divisive leadership is finally bearing fruit why not stir everyone up takes their minds off the 40 million jobs lost and the 140,000 covid dead the russan bounty ect ect

That's pretty rich. Trump and Fox demonize the left. He's done everything in his power to stoke division. By contrast if you go to MSNBC for example, it's clearly left wing media, but they are attacking Trump or other politicians for the most part.

The protests in multiple cities had begun to settle down until Trump deployed federal agents to the cities spreading gasoline on the fire. If you believe in the latest polls, Trump is actually driving people to vote for Biden.

I would like to see BLM and their sponsors offer to help pay the bill for all of the destruction,loss of business . loss of jobs and medical costs that resulted from their protests, instead of innocent taxpayers who in many instances hunkered down in fear while waiting for the weekend summer of love festivities to turn to a Monday normalcy!

They will. And the only negative comments will be around "the authoritarian aggressive behavior of the Federal Agents Trump sent in against the wishes of the local mayors and governors".

 

The BBC seem to think arson, vandalism, assault, defying law instructions and laws, thieving, looting, intimidation are all acceptable as long as its a left wing cause they approve of.

Settle down - you mean into no go zones where ordinary citizens were extorted and assaulted whilst watching thieving, arson, looting, vandalism as Democrat mayors and governors ordered the police not to interfere?

It certainly seems the Democrats want to fuel all the law and disorder, and excuse the criminal thieving and assaults, in order to score political points. The more radical ranks within the democrats would like to see a situation of chaos and mob rule in the public court of intimidation. From that chaotic collapse they can impose the society they want. 

 

And what an America that would be! Putin and Xi must be licking their lips!

The more Trump demonstrates his absolutely fake "law and order pedigree", the more he alienates the majority of the American population and drops in the polls.

Dear oh dear, the amount of people that think getting Trump out will make the rainbows shine brighter , the pretty birds sing in the flowering trees and everyone hold hands and dance gaily around a ribboned maypole tree is maddening.
