You comments may be well intentioned, but experience with such systems suggests otherwise.

Mayoral Secretary Kamolnart and City Manager Jatupong briefed Moss on City Hall. Tourist Police and Pattaya Police deployments and led him on a tour of Pattaya's CCTV Operations Centre and 1337 Call Centre.

The fibre optic signal can't cause it to burn out, so is there some other unspecified factor involved? Or am I asking too many questions - I'm obviously not a journalist.

Usually the transformer nearby or HV/Electrical cables oin the vicinity.

Possibly, but only only if the fibre optic cable sheathing was fractured, exposing the outer metal protective sheathing around the central core itself.

Even then it would need to be in contact/very close to the HV for anything to happen. Also it would undoubtedly take out some of the equipment in the control centre, at the other end of the fibre optic cable.

 

How many hundreds of cables has this happened to, according to the mayor?

Are they doing unused overhead cable demolitions in Pattaya? I seem to recall they were going to after poles started falling over. Out here doing road widening, so poles had to be relocated, and the fibre optics equipment. Well Somchai demolished the cables still being used, so internet off for a couple of days. Maybe he has worked in Pattaya and throws the old cables on the fire so can get the copper out easily, hence cables burnt out.  All jokes aside they probably did not spec the cameras and power supplies for 60degc which is what is needed for enclosed equipment exposed to sunlight here, works for a while and then pop, works no more.
