webfact
Thailand ‘first’ Asean nation to roll out 5G commercial service By The Nation Thailand is the first country in Asean to launch a 5G commercial service, while existing 4G systems are ready to be upgraded to 5G, government deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said. She said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has encouraged investment in 5G to develop technology and the industrial structure. Fifth-generation connection and technologies would be used in the Eastern Economic Corridor as well as in big cities to turn them into “smart cities”. Ratchada said the 5G project would commence in 2023 and cover 98 per cent of the population by 2027. The connection speed is expected to be 100 mbps in municipalities and 50 mbps in other areas. Some 7,000 SMEs are expected to apply 5G technology, and its value is likely to be 6.6 per cent of the country’s GDP. Moreover, basic education will be able to access about 700,000 digital educational services, which might help raise Thailand’s IMD World Digital Competitiveness Ranking to number eight. Meanwhile, 5G innovation research can spur commerce by 50 per cent, she added. Popular Post laocowboy2
Article is not accurate (what a surprise) or the government spokesperson is clueless (also possible). Singapore has already given licenses to two providers Singtel and the M1-Staar Hub JV (who will use Ericsson and Nokia tech respectively). Service will roll out in early 2021. From the article, the Thai service will not start until 2023 "Ratchada said the 5G project would commence in 2023". Malaysia has been delayed as spectrum allocations were revoked in June because of 'issues' - which we can guess at given it is Malaysia. It is very possible that Cambodia may also be ready to roll out 5G in PP and Siem Reap in H1 2021 - Smart (sub of Malaysian Axiata) and the local Cellcard. The latter plans to at the same time upgrade its existing 4g network to increase capacity and data speeds. 5G and 4G will continue in parallel everywhere for some time to come.

Probably the target to cater 98% of the population by 2023 - poor reporting as usual Edit: oh the 98 percent was for 2027 - well in any case - I believe the tech companies announcements more than any govt official sharting from their mouthpieces ????
