It looks like Marvel fans could soon be seeing Spider-Woman on the big screen, with actress and director Olivia Wilde dropping a not-so-subtle hint about her upcoming superhero project.

The star confirmed the news she has closed a deal with Sony Pictures to direct and develop a film revolving around a female character, posting a simple spider emoji on Twitter.

Sony's official Twitter feed gave Wilde's tweet a round of applause emoji back.

A number of female characters have taken on the Spider-Woman alter ego over the years, including the original Jessica Drew, as well as Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson.

All depends how they do it. Hit girl was great, Arya Stark was great (most of the female leads in GoT were), even Katara and Toff (last Airbender) were great and that's a kids cartoon. Lagertha from vikings. There are heaps of examples of awesome female leads. The question is, will be it written as poorly as the latest "batwoman" tv show? Or as excellent as "westworld"?

No one is claiming that women don't make great characters. My favourite strong female character was Dana Delaney as McMurphy in China Beach. That series was led by women.

Unfortunately, movies now that make females the lead tend to be overly PC, which spoils them eg Mary Queen of Scots, and Mary Poppins Returns.

GOT was about the story, not any specific character, which is why it was so successful ( till the fiasco of series 8 ).
