Anna Leonowens beat you to the map lesson by 158 years.

Thereby hangs a tale.

   Cocky farangs come and go.

Thais, blissful in their ignorance abide.

They don't call it "The Land of Smiles" for nothing.

Because they generally don't have a clue about the outside world.

Too broad and too simplistic Rot.

They read or see international news. They see foreign movies on TV. They talk to foreigners. They see fashion and lifestyle reports on their phones.

Some of them actually read these forums.

Not a clue is incorrect.

How they process the information is a different discussion.

Probably 0.1% of Thais. Even the movies are dubbed into Thai.

Spot on mate, Thais have absolutely no idea about anything outside Thailand.

My school director wife is a perfect example, no clue as to where other countries are in the world.

Are you suggesting that the dialog is purposely mistranslated? I think not.

And the images are also altered so as to present a distorted view of other countries? I think not.

Are you suggesting a national conspiracy to make foreign countries look like failed states.

I'm just not sure what your point is.

You can't fool all the people all the time.

OK. Tit for tat.

My Thai Lady routinely informs me of global events, weather in other countries, political events, etc. My lady was born poor in Phetchabun, has a sixth grade education, and worked in a restaurant.

So our respective mates are unique persons in all of Thailand?

I doubt it.

Making globally expansive definitive statements about masses of people ( such as Thais have no....) is generally a fool's game.

You appear to misunderstand my post, i was not referring to events, but geography, my wife is not unique in that respect very few Thais know anything about world geography, it is not taught in schools here.

Point is most Thais don't know enough English to read foreign news, nor do they have any interest in it. The brainwashing of Thailand being the center of the universe that starts in the kindergarten has taken care of that.

yes .... most don't know or even want to learn english hence the lack of interest outside or on tv or news in english.

I understood your point well enough to know that it is factually incorrect, as it must certainly be when it describes the knowledge of 65 million people as if they are all clones, my lady being one of them.

As you might notice from other posts I've made, broad and globally inclusive truisms are one of my hot buttons.

Everybody says, everybody thinks, everybody knows, they all.....

Bad ways to express an opinion. It's an easy way to state an opinion and equally easily refuted by fact. Better and safer ways are:

Many say, some think, a majority do, few believe, etc.

At least it leaves some wiggle room so one can retreat with minimum loss of face.

Virtually all things exist on a bell-shaped distribution curve with each end being asymptotic. Such statements are always needlessly facile and often vacuous as well.

You may consider this pedantic, but I believe it's better to be very clear when casting mass aspersions.

I know many Thais that have gone to live in other countries and every one of them believes that they have moved somewhere with a better standard of living and quality of life. Yes, even those that are now in the UK or USA!

It makes me wonder why so many of us choose to live in Thailand!!!!!

Because of the cost of living mostly. For single men there is another obvious reason.

Hear hear. My wife asked me what I thought about some explosion in Beirut, I'd never heard of it. A typoon in Japan, same.

Interest in global events has nothing to do with educational qualifications.

In 1990, only 4% of Yanks had passports. Thailand is a developing nation whereas the US is the opposite.

In the 90s, I never filled in one of these things.

My point is that Thailand is developing and 30/50 years behind Western countries.

Many come here to benefit from what a developing country offers yet criticize it for not being like their own.

For example, in mamny people's lifetimes the US didn't allow black people to vote and had terrible discrimination, separate toilets/seats on buses etc, yet some get their knickers in a twist if they don't get the local discount at a national park or if they get charged more at a tourist restaurant.

We will be in total agreement if we  can substitute 'people' for "thais", 'foreign language ' for "English", and 'any country' for "Thailand".

What you describe is the norm everywhere, as are the results.

I come from a country whose citizens are generally not aware of The Civil War, or that Canada and Mexico are neighboring countries, or what/where the District of Columbia is.

Ignorance is rampant and survival of knowledge across generations woeful across the world. Some countries are better than others but not so much that you would notice. No particular reason to indict the Thai for this.

Indoctrination and provincialism are hallmarks of humanity.

Why would I read world news that have been translated from the original reporting language and had issues lost in the translation. Duh.

Thanks. But I object to mass bashes of all types. Their statements attempt to claim that all people may be considered without studied distinction.

Even statements such as' all humans have two eyes and ten toes" is demonstrably incorrect. But I'm not arguing semantics. I'm arguing against mass derision as a way of stating a discriminatory opinion without proper support. It's too easy to do even though it may feel good.

How I would dearly love to say that "Thai drivers are reckless". Taking the time to examine such a statement forces me to admit that it's simply gratuitous and its wiser to either abandon my intention, or make my point more clearly with proper qualifiers.

Mostly it would be better if I just refrained from any comment the majority of the time.
