Ask him to sneak a look at her bank book, salary payment will be fairly obvious.

What sort of nosey old women are ye?

To answer the OP, likely around 60,000 p/m, private, 40,000 civil (with pension and interest free mortgage and loans.)

    More like 30k-40k.

Easily, as I manage all that on less than 50k/month. If she's renting the house out, that'll probably pay for itself. Most of my spending is on women, I suspect she doesn't have that problem

  • Her salary is so low because she's working for a government hospital. However, government workers have a few benefits which I don't know in detail but many people who I ask said they are good.

all that on 50k?

I am doing something wrong.

House and condo on 40 year payments, car on 10 year payments, 100 baht daily allowance for 3 x 33.34 baht meals.

A friend of mine is dating for a few months a Thai Doctor.

She is a Radiologist, working for the government.

I asked my mate how much a high profile job like this makes. He told me that he has no clue and that she is always moaning

about the stress, competition and low pay.

Three more options:

a) Ask her. It seems many Thais are pretty open about how much money they make.

b) Ask indirect, like: You are always complaining, in your job you must make at least xxxk THB. Look at her reaction.

c) Look at her credit cards when she pays. Different cards require different minimum incomes. And if Thais are able to get a xxx color card you can be pretty sure they will go for that as a status symbol.

As far as I know many don't have to pay for the university under the condition that after university they will spend a couple of years in a public hospital. I am sure others know more details.

And I confirm 2nd and 3rd jobs in private hospitals and clinics are normal.

A Thai friend went to an Ivy League University in the US and then got a M.S. at Stanford.  He had to work for the Thai Government for 10 years or more to pay it all off.  He's now working for a US Company in Thailand as is quite happy with a US salary and Thai expenses.

Most doctors have to do the same, so most of them have extra jobs at clinics or at private hospitals where they make up for their low paying Government Hospital jobs.

Why always such a low opinion of Thai women?

All women are selling it, Thai women are just a bit more obvious, and a bit more honest.

Which I sort of respect.

If you only know people who are at the bottom of society, you will have a bit distorted view.

I only mix with university graduates.

How about you Fritz?

Did your wife finish school at age 12?

I'm betting she did!

How many degrees in your farming family?

Ah, several giks! Will make the old man's rocking chair rock.

There is a difference... many doctors in public hospitals got their degree paid for by the government... they were great students but poor so the govt paid it forward, and it is returned in low paying doctor jobs in govt hospitals...

and some of these doctors open private clinics after hours where they can make pretty good money sometimes..

ask her who paid for her medical school...

Would there be a single cardiologist among them maybe? And an IO? I haven't yet had much luck on Thai Friendly. So any leads would be highly appreciated.

30,000 baht as a specialist, having studied 6 years medicine, done a Msc and going through all this studying to be on salary you could make, managing a McDonalds. That is ridiculous.

Welcome to Thailand!

At my daughter's school, I know one couple, both Doctors.

They have 2 kids at private school. They own a villa with tennis court. Probably 20-30Million Baht.

You don't pay that with a 50k salary and no bank would give you tenth of millions if you earn this kind of money, even if you are a DR.

Doctors in public hospitals are on a government salary. They however, do extra work on weekend clinics and are paid per patient. I recall a doctor (not the one seeing me) processing about 50 patients in a mornign session - that's about 20K baht for a few hours work. Their regular pay is much lower. Private hospitals are a different story.

glad you have enough to retire comfortably as so many do not...

ps - sell cliches and buy fresh thoughts...

Salaries are commensurate with your potential earning power based upon life experiences and education.  However, the career progression light in the corner of your eye seems to have gone off before the proper amount was needed to finance retirement the way one would want it, I understand but don't be a hater.

Hospital jobs for government hospitals do not earn well at all. Can be as low as 20k for her starting salary first 5-10 years. Even it might be 25K she would also pay off education debt for 5K alone already. People over estimate salaries big time. Just few earn the larger salaries. Starting general doctor is 30k, lawyer too.

Yes you can be lucky and yes there are quite a few dozen hospitals who do pay great but that is really a minority of people earning good. I have two nurse friends too who had the looks and contacts, bought a position back then and earn 60k a month with night shifts. But few of their friends do.

Often these people get a car on installments for their jobs too, which means another 8K baht a month being gone already. Really not makes you rich.

Add on to that, you can forget about bringing her to your home country doing that same job, because she would earn so well. Qualifications won't match.

Just spoke to my mate.

His GF is 42, highly qualified Radiologist but no idea about her earnings.

She just works for the Government and no private hospitals.

Would be a shame if she would just earn around 50k

To become a radiologist, that's another 5-10 years after medical degree. In Europe, she would be on big wages.

Even at that age, it is likely she earns under 40K baht in a government hospital. It would also be likely she has debts/installments/support at 15-20K at least.

I have do a x ray again in RAM this weekend, if I remember I will ask them what those young ones earn. Had quite a few in the past and they mess up often twice.

Qualifications here and in Europe are very different as well the education. You can typically become a doctor here without ever studying hard.
Been to quite a few dentists having their own little radiology department on a 4th floor townhouse, where someone sleeps next door. Lol!

You just pay your way forward and get homework done and approved. On top you make sure the teacher gets his bonus too.

My good thai friend has a son married to a doctor.  She makes 350k baht per month working as a trainer in a private hospital training other doctors on surgical procedures.  About 40 years of age now.

Prior to that her salary was much lower as the thai government paid for her medical school and in return she was required to work in government hospitals for a few years.

You won't find them there, need to have something to offer them first (not talking about money but a bit of character, fun , nice life experiences and a good laugh together)

In the US..  All told, a radiologist completes about 13 years of training after high school. In addition to this training, there are two exams to successfully take to become certified by the American Board of Radiology. Some subspecialties of radiology must be chosen during the residency period.

Her salary will depend on how many years she has been working for the Ministry of Public Health, and whether she does any over-time or not.

Base starting salary for medical doctors in Thai government hospitals is about Baht 25,000 per month, give or take about Baht 5,000.

As she is a radiologist, rather than a radiographer (someone who does a radiography degree rather than a medical degree) she would have had to have done about three-four years of specialist training after her initial employment as a general doctor (as the original post noted).  This would bring her base salary up to about Baht 45,000 per month.

How much doctors and specialists get paid vary slightly from government hospital to government hospital.  Some specialists at my local hospital were paid Baht 4,000 to do a 3-hour over-time shift.  However, a new hospital director was appointed and he reduced the over-time payments to Baht 2,000 for a 3-hour shift.

Finally "... she [the radiologist] is always moaning about the stress, competition and low pay.", which is why many specialists exit the government health care system.  Many others set up after hours private clinics, where they can earn substanially more money.  For some specialists, like radiologists, this is not an option.

You are correct. My wife had to do this and was on contract for many yrs at a govt hospital in the sticks. She learnt on the job treating thousands of patients and now left the govt' and works privately earning good money. And yes she was working privately part time whilst locked into that govt role.

This is Thailand, Thailand doesn't pay anyone anywhere near what they pay in western countries. It should be more, but it is not very often more. Working the private hospital would greatly increase her wage. Especially if she speaks English which is a requirement for staff in some of the Private hospitals

yes, she speaks perfectly English.

Yesterday, she was on call, a 24 hour shift.

I still don't get my head around this rubbish salary.

You think as a high trained Dr., you would be Hi-So.

Imagine you go to see to rent an apartment and are told, 20,000baht for a 50m2.

Oh sorry, I am a medical Dr but can't afford this because I earn only 30k
