Bangkok seafood vendor caught cheating

By The Nation

A Facebook user posted a video revealing the trick of a seafood vendor in Bangkok’s Tor Kor market who hid nails inside prawns to make them heavier, so he could charge more.

Rawiporn Imarrom said she had bought seven king prawns for Bt1,900 and found nails in four of them.

She said she had posted the video to warn shoppers, because the market is known for its seafood and she did not expect such behaviour.

After the clip went viral and netizens attacked the shop for cheating its clients, the market’s administration had the shop owner return Bt1,900 to Rawiporn and apologise.

Did he really think that a customer would not notice 6 rusty nails in their seafood?

Silly moo complaining about that, isn't she aware that iron is an essential dietary requirement?

Just how much would those nails weight ?

...but did Rawiporn Imarrom return the nails so the market’s administration and the shop owner could reuse them for the next customer? That Bt1,900 returnn shouldn't come free.  ????

Added iron at no extra cost will claim the vendor ????

Did someone verify that story?

It's not that I think it's impossible. But if that is real how long did the vendor think he can get away with that?

All Thais I know eat the meat in those legs. It's impossible to "hide" nails in there.

Not much iron in a Thai nail.

The size of the nails isn't mentioned, neither is the weight of the 7 prawns.

An average 10cm wire nail might weigh about 12g. So, if 6 were found in 1kg of prawns, that would represent around 7% of the total weight.

Years back my Thai MIL bought something that was weighed on one of those old hanging wooden scales.  She went to steady the scale.  She stealthily palmed some bits of magnet and stuck them to the bottom of the counter weight.

So Thai prawns found to be fake, contain rusty Thai nails. Then Thai nails found to be fake, contain no actual Iron. Vendor found to be a liar, can't believe anything he says. Just another day in paradise.

The story itself makes no sense, I would suggest that he's been doing this for years, but was generally sober enough to remember to remove the nails after cooking. Hence now he gets caught.

"Think"        there was no thought process but he has won, he has no penalty and  will carry on with his devious little money making activities, the real villains are the authorities for there lack of a meaningful penalty, or is this another case of poor reporting and the seller has had his hands removed for the crime.

It looks like vendor doesn't know there are nails in the prawn.

They normally buy prawn from local fishermen or prawn farms.

One of the fisherman may come up with the idea to make more money when selling to the vendor by adding nails to the catch of the day.

He know he will not get caught because vendor cannot inspect every single prawns from every single fisherman.

Having said that, vendor is still responsible for quality control of seafood they are selling and need to inspect more thoroughly.

Rusty nails like these are far more likely to be found in a fishing shack or boat than a market.

You could well have hit the nail on the head there.

:sorry:

He must be brainless.....not unique in this country.

How do you say in Thai? Mai mi Samong?

Well, the vendor certainly got "nailed"!

I'm less concerned about a nail in the seafood - which I can find - than the water in my noodles after recent stories

These are not the average prawns sold in Makro etc. They are large tiger prawns. The piece of shell at bottom left hand corner with nail in it is possibly from a crab leg.     After the trader apologized and refunded the money (B1900) to the customer, he was allowed, by the market,  to continue his nefarious little business. :whistling:

Yes.

Bt1,900 equates to £46.00, for 7 king prawns ?
