Transport Ministry to build over 12,000 km of rubber fender barriers within three years

BANGKOK(NNT) - The Ministry of Transport continues to support the use of para rubber to promote road safety, in an effort to ensure the stability of para rubber prices in the country. Yesterday, the Prime Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, attended the launch of a pilot project on Highway No. 3249 in Chanthaburi province. The project uses natural rubber sheets to cover concrete barriers and installs guide posts made from natural rubber to boost road safety.

The cabinet approved a 2.771-billion-baht budget to implement the project. In the first phase, 1.719 billion baht will be allocated to the Department of Highways and 1.052 billion baht to the Department of Rural Roads. The project will help improve road safety, while helping para rubber farmers earn more.

The Transport Minister, Saksayam Chidchob, said the project underwent a crash test, conducted by the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR) and Korea Automobile Testing and Research Institute (KATRI) in South Korea. The result proved that it can help reduce the impact of a crash. A traditional 90-centimeter barrier with an angle of 20 degrees can absorb the impact of a test automobile at 90 kilometers per hour.

After covering the barrier with a processed para rubber sheet, the impact absorption rate increased by 30 percent, or to about 120 to 130 kilometers per hour. Moreover, the vehicle will not overturn after the impact, and this is considered a new innovation.

The Ministry of Transport is planning to use these rubber fenders barriers (RFBs) and rubber guide posts on highways and rural roads nationwide, using a budget of 85.624 billion baht, from 2020 to 2022. About 1 million tons of para rubber latex will be used to create 12,282 kilometers of RFBs and 1.06 million rubber guide posts, helping farmers to generate 71 percent of revenues, or some 30 billion baht.

How many  % of accident barrier is involved? They still don't care how people drive! Or do they have licence or are they drunk! Just make more nice barrier!

At least with Rubber Barriers, the carnage will be kept to the actual confines of the Road, and not involve so many innocent pedestrians and Stall Holders.

There is only one solution to the insanity of the Thai Roads.

Lay down AGV tracks on every road and remove the steering wheel / handlebars.

Now thats the benefit of Robotics for you in Thailand .

I thought a facemask was enough. In addition to an amulet, of course

I guess there must be a surplus of rubber now tourists aren't coming in to Thailand.

Thai people hit more than just barriers, so why not encapsulate all the cars in rubber?

That way they can all stay protected......

Haha with the new innovation comes the pinball effect and airborne pickups reaching the 4th floor of any nearby condo ????

Yes, rubber cars should do it...

Good for drumming up business for the rubber industry but as has been noted above, better policing and actively testing people for drunk driving would be better, in addition, have they completed tests to ascertain the impact of the sun on these rubber coverings? everyone knows how much damage the sun's rays have on rubber and covering concrete in rubber sheets I cannot imagine they will hold their protective properties for a very long period of time, maybe someone has large shares in rubber plantations ...............LOL

How to get 12'000kms delivered? Order and pay (with taxpayers money) 120'000kms ...... ????

If this innovation does nothing else, it will keep the noise of tortured metal being ripped off the cars down to a bare minimum.

We hope  :whistling:

Better training for the Police,  Chase Cars, equiped with Radar speed detecters.  Transponders to record vehicle speed and front and rear (in car) video cams (sistered to speedometer) for personal and commercial vehicles.

Great idea, the vehicles can now bounce back even further into the following traffic. !!!

They should go into negotiations with Honda/Toyota to manufacture these especially for release in Thailand

They would be the best option EV vehicle for the future.

They also use rubber tires around the scones, they end up on the next lane being an obstacle for motocyclists....

If they really want to improve road safety they better ask the farang for help.

Supporting the rubber Industry . It's hasn't got much to do with saving the Carnage on the roads .

It may get worse if they put enough Rubber on the posts and Rails .

The vehicles may Bounce back on the road and Kill more innocent people.

Move along.... Nothing to see here.... Just another "eat money" project.

Covering the ubiquitous concrete electricity poles, trees, central reservations with sheet rubber  and providing rubber barriers for sharp bends...(don't get me started on those) will only help the rubber industry. It will do nothing to curb the carnage on the roads. Perhaps, as said before, the rubber would be better off being used to wrap cars, busses, pickups, lorries and motorbikes. Better still, wrap the drivers. Ah, a light bulb moment....use the rubber for tyres (tires) with tread...

I do like the idea of bumper cars though. No good around here on the badly rutted dirt roads, unless they float on mud  too.  Aha, bumper hovercraft. That'll sort it.

Exactly. There are reasons behnd the design of suitable permanent road barriers and energy absorbion properties. Rubber does not fit into this class as it has a high coefficient of restitution.

GAME OVER

TILT

Why not teach them to steer properly? Then they won't hit anything!

With a good quality tyre only lasting 5 years...maybe 6...I am wondering how long the impact absorbing rubber will last for???
