The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) has warned nine provinces that the southwest monsoon, which covers the Andaman Sea and is heading to the mainland, may cause floods.

ONWR deputy secretary-general Samroeng Sangphuwong said that according to the Thai Meteorological Department and the Hydro-Informatics Institute, the amount of rain would increase between today (September 2) and tomorrow.

The expected consequence would be floods in Bangkok, Uthai Thani, Lopburi, Chainat, Ratchaburi, Suphanburi, Kanchanaburi, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan today until September 4.

Some areas have accumulated 90mm of rainfall within 24 hours, with rivers rising. Residential areas are at risk of floods while road surfaces might be damaged if flood waters are not drained in time, Samroeng warned.

The ONWR is now clearing river and canal choke-points and getting rid of objects that are blocking water flow to prepare for heavy rains this month.
